PNY RTX 5090 Power Connector Melts Through During Lightweight Indie Gaming


Another GeForce RTX 5090 has suffered severe 12V 2x6 power connector damage, with this case leaving enough melted plastic between 2 neighboring contacts to create a visible hole in the connector housing. What makes the incident particularly unusual is that the owner noticed the burning smell while playing lightweight 2D indie games rather than running a demanding benchmark or modern GPU intensive title.

The incident was documented by Reddit user UnpluggedUnfettered in the original report. The owner had been playing Shattered Pixel Dungeon before switching to Crypt of the NecroDancer when a burning smell became noticeable. Inspection revealed extensive heat damage around the GPU side 12V 2x6 connection, with the plastic separating 2 contacts on the upper row melted away.

The references to pushing the games at maximum settings were sarcastic. Both are lightweight pixel based titles from more than a decade ago, and the owner later clarified that the RTX 5090 was actually underclocked at the time. That makes the circumstances particularly interesting, although it does not prove that the 12V 2x6 connector suddenly failed while operating at a low electrical load. No GPU power logs, connector temperatures, or individual conductor current measurements were recorded when the damage occurred.

The affected card was a PNY GeForce RTX 5090 installed inside a DigitalStorm prebuilt system. According to the owner, the power cable could be removed before obvious catastrophic damage spread further into the GPU itself, and a local repair business has since offered to replace the damaged GPU side 12V 2x6 connection for approximately 180$. The complete condition of the card remains unknown until that inspection is finished.

The owner also claims PNY declined the warranty request because the power cable had not been supplied by PNY. DigitalStorm, by contrast, reportedly remained in contact and offered to coordinate the case with the graphics card manufacturer. The owner decided against shipping the entire system back and instead chose the local repair option. PNY has not publicly commented on this specific case, so the warranty response currently comes only from the customer's account.

The distinction between connector capacity and actual GPU consumption is also important. NVIDIA officially rates the reference GeForce RTX 5090 at 575 W Total Graphics Power and specifies either 4 PCIe 8 pin cables through an adapter or one PCIe Gen 5 cable capable of supplying up to 600 W through the card's 12V 2x6 input. Individual PNY models may use different clocks and board power settings, but nothing shared by the owner indicates the card was approaching maximum power when the burning smell appeared.

That does not mean a light game somehow overloaded the RTX 5090. A 12V 2x6 connection can overheat if electrical resistance increases at individual contacts, if current distribution becomes uneven, or if there are problems with contact pressure, contamination, manufacturing tolerances, cable damage, or connector seating. Once resistance increases at one contact, localized heating can worsen the connection and create a feedback cycle where the damaged area becomes progressively hotter.

The RTX 5090's single 12V 2x6 power input has remained under scrutiny since Blackwell launched. Multiple cards from different manufacturers have been reported with damaged connectors, although individual incidents do not establish the overall failure rate or prove that every failure shares the same cause. In another recent case, an RTX PRO 6000 suffered severe 12V 2x6 connector melting despite an ASRock TempGuard thermal sensor, showing that high power connector failures can also develop in systems specifically equipped with thermal protection.

The industry has responded with increasingly elaborate monitoring and protection products. Aqua Computer's Ampinel actively monitors and balances current across the 12V 2x6 connection, while the ASUS ROG Equalizer uses revised conductors and contacts designed to reduce electrical resistance and voltage drop. These accessories exist largely because detecting a developing problem through total GPU power alone may not reveal what is happening at an individual contact inside the 12V 2x6 interface.

The latest case is therefore notable not because Crypt of the NecroDancer is somehow dangerous to an RTX 5090, but because the failure became obvious while the card was being used for an extremely modest gaming workload and was reportedly underclocked. If degradation had already developed inside the 12V 2x6 connection beforehand, the game may simply have been running when the connector finally became hot enough for the owner to smell it.

A 575 W flagship graphics card should obviously survive lightweight 2D gaming, but there is no evidence that either indie title created the electrical conditions that damaged the 12V 2x6 connector. The more useful observation is that connector degradation may not always announce itself during a 600 W benchmark. A compromised contact can potentially continue heating during ordinary use until the damage becomes visible.

That makes individual contact monitoring increasingly relevant. Total board power can look completely normal while one conductor is carrying substantially more current or one terminal has developed higher resistance than the others.

The owner also says the card was underclocked, which is another reminder that reducing GPU power can lower stress but cannot guarantee protection against a 12V 2x6 connection that has already become electrically compromised.
