ASUS ROG Equalizer Cuts RTX 5090 Voltage Drop by 87.5% in One User Test

An ASUS ROG Equalizer cable reportedly delivered a major improvement for an RTX 5090 gaming PC suffering from unstable voltage readings and random restarts. The result comes from a single user test rather than an independent controlled review, but it offers an interesting example of how cable condition and electrical resistance can affect a graphics card operating above 600W.

According to the Reddit report, the system initially appeared to operate normally despite visible brown discoloration on its original 16 pin power cable. The owner later began experiencing unexpected restarts, which were initially attributed to Windows 11 updates. Further investigation showed that the 3.3V rail was falling as low as 2.968V under load, indicating a potential power delivery problem.

After replacing the original cable with the ASUS ROG Equalizer, the owner tested the RTX 5090 while playing Pragmata at approximately 600W to 635W. The original cable reportedly allowed the graphics card voltage to fall to 11.2V, representing a 0.8V drop from 12V. With the ROG Equalizer installed, the voltage remained between 11.9V and 12V, reducing the maximum observed drop to 0.1V. Based on those readings, the measured voltage drop decreased by 87.5%.

The user also reported improved readings from the 3.3V and 5V rails. However, the thermal comparison was not measured with dedicated equipment. The original cable was described as too hot to touch and was estimated to have reached approximately 80°C, while the ROG Equalizer reportedly remained considerably cooler. These temperature observations should therefore be treated as anecdotal rather than verified thermal data.

ASUS markets the ROG Equalizer as a premium 12V 2x6 cable designed to reduce localized heat and improve current handling. The company claims that its design increases supported short term current capacity from 9.2A to 17A per pin, uses tinned oxygen free copper conductors and includes enlarged gold plated contacts to reduce resistance. It is compatible with ATX 3.1 power supplies featuring a native 12V 2x6 connection.

The latest result does not settle the wider debate surrounding the accessory. Previous testing by Der8auer found differences of up to 4A between individual pins, while another unverified report showed an Equalizer connector with visible melting damage. These reports indicate that the cable should not be treated as a guaranteed solution for every 16 pin power issue.

There is also an important limitation in this specific RTX 5090 test. The original cable had already experienced visible discoloration and apparent wear, meaning that replacing it with another undamaged standard cable may also have corrected the voltage instability. The result demonstrates that the Equalizer performed better than one deteriorated cable, but it does not prove that it universally outperforms every properly installed 12V 2x6 cable.

This case is less a definitive victory for the ROG Equalizer and more a reminder that cable health remains critical for extremely power hungry graphics cards. An RTX 5090 operating above 600W places considerable electrical and thermal stress on its connector, making discoloration, unusual heat and system instability warning signs that should not be ignored. With RTX 50 Series hardware concerns already affecting consumer confidence, manufacturers need to provide better monitoring, clearer safety guidance and stronger power delivery designs rather than relying on expensive replacement accessories.
