God of War Laufey Delayed to May 2027 as Santa Monica Studio Extends Development

Sony Interactive Entertainment and Santa Monica Studio have officially delayed God of War Laufey from February 16 to May 20, 2027, giving the development team approximately 3 additional months to refine the upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive. The announcement was confirmed through an official statement from Santa Monica Studio on November 4, with the developer explaining that additional time is necessary to complete the finishing touches and deliver the experience envisioned for the next chapter of the franchise.

Since its initial reveal in June 2026, God of War Laufey has attracted significant attention for introducing Faye, Kratos' wife and Atreus' mother, as the playable protagonist. Portrayed by Deborah Ann Woll, Faye explores the Everywhen, a mysterious afterlife populated by gods and supernatural beings from different mythologies. The game introduces a faster and more acrobatic combat system that combines elements of the original Greek saga with the modern Norse titles. Players can utilize magical abilities, soul manipulation, customizable equipment, and the Serpent Bow combat system, allowing seamless transitions between ranged attacks, aerial combinations, and melee encounters.

The game was originally scheduled for February 16, 2027, with preorders opening on September 29. Its postponement also moves the title away from an unusually competitive February release window, which includes METRO 2039, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, and Persona 4 Revival. Although this separation could benefit its commercial performance, Santa Monica Studio has not suggested that competition influenced the decision.

Beyond its release schedule, God of War Laufey has faced criticism from some fans regarding the decision to shift attention away from Kratos, alongside broader discussions about the franchise's direction. Santa Monica Studio has clarified that Laufey is a mainline installment rather than a traditional spinoff, with development reportedly planned as part of the franchise's longer narrative direction since 2018. However, there is no confirmed connection between the community's reception and the delay. For now, the developer remains focused on completing the game, with additional information expected ahead of its May 2027 release.

Delaying a major PlayStation exclusive after opening preorders is not ideal, but additional development time is preferable to releasing an unfinished product. God of War Laufey represents a significant creative departure for Santa Monica Studio, particularly with its new protagonist and revised combat mechanics. These changes create additional expectations for gameplay quality, technical stability, and narrative execution.

Moving the release to May also gives the game more breathing room in an increasingly crowded AAA market. Ultimately, the success of Laufey will depend less on its release date and more on whether Santa Monica Studio can demonstrate that the franchise remains compelling beyond Kratos.

Do you believe delaying God of War Laufey until May 2027 is the right decision, or are you more concerned about the franchise moving away from Kratos as its main protagonist?
