METRO 2039 Locks February 4, 2027 Ahead of a Brutal Gaming Month
4A Games has confirmed that METRO 2039 arrives on February 4, 2027, placing the post apocalyptic shooter at the front of what has become one of the most competitive AAA launch windows in recent memory. The announcement came during PlayStation State of Play alongside the first console gameplay captured on PlayStation 5 Pro, narrowing the previously announced February 2027 window from the game's first major gameplay reveal. Players in some territories including Asia, Australia, and New Zealand will receive the game on February 5 because of regional timing.
The surrounding calendar is unusually aggressive, with several major franchises arriving within weeks of one another.
| Game | Release Date |
|---|---|
| METRO 2039 | February 4, 2027 |
| Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis | February 12, 2027 |
| God of War Laufey | February 16, 2027 |
| Persona 4 Revival | February 18, 2027 |
| Fable | February 23, 2027 |
Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog bring Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis on February 12, followed by Sony Santa Monica's God of War Laufey on February 16. Atlus follows with Persona 4 Revival on February 18, while Playground Games closes the major rush with Fable on February 23. January is already busy as well, with RGG Studio's Stranger Than Heaven arriving January 15 and Firesprite's Until Dawn 2 following on January 28.
The new State of Play footage also provided the first console look at METRO 2039 running on PlayStation 5 Pro. 4A Games confirmed that both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro will offer a Performance Mode combining 60 FPS, ray tracing, and 4K output, while Xbox Series X is also listed with support for 4K Ultra HD, 60 FPS, and ray tracing. The studio continues using its proprietary 4A Engine, building on technology previously demonstrated with Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition.
The gameplay follows The Stranger, the new protagonist replacing Artyom at the center of the story. A former Spartan with a violent past, The Stranger returns to a radically changed Moscow Metro while facing the Novoreich regime and the increasingly dangerous surface. The footage showed radiation management, stealth, environmental exploration, silenced weapons, Molotovs, close range combat, and the oppressive atmosphere that has traditionally defined the series.
Taking the first major February slot gives 4A Games valuable breathing room before the calendar becomes considerably more crowded. METRO 2039 will have more than a week before Tomb Raider and nearly 3 weeks before Fable, giving it a better opportunity to establish momentum before attention becomes divided across several major RPG and action adventure releases.
February 2027 is shaping up to be a scheduling problem for players, and METRO 2039 benefits from getting through the door first. That positioning matters because the month quickly becomes packed with high profile releases across multiple genres.
The technical presentation could also help it stand apart. Metro has consistently been used to demonstrate high end rendering technology, and delivering 60 FPS with ray tracing on current consoles could make METRO 2039 one of the first major technical showcases of 2027.
The bigger challenge may simply be player bandwidth. With Tomb Raider, God of War Laufey, Persona 4 Revival, and Fable following in quick succession, even a strong launch will be competing for attention almost immediately.
Which February 2027 game gets your time first: METRO 2039, Tomb Raider, God of War Laufey, Persona 4 Revival, or Fable?
