God of War Laufey Preorders Open as Santa Monica Details Faye’s Serpent Bow Combat

God of War Laufey preorders are opening on September 29 at 10:00 AM local time, and Santa Monica Studio has used the occasion to reveal its clearest look yet at how differently Faye will fight from Kratos. The PlayStation 5 exclusive launches February 16, 2027, with the latest footage centered on Faye’s Serpent Bow, a transforming weapon designed to move rapidly between precision shooting, close range attacks, aerial juggling, and melee combinations. Rather than functioning as a conventional secondary ranged weapon, the bow appears to be integrated directly into the combat system.

Players who preorder receive the Last Wish Armor Set, the Golden Leaves appearance for Phranque, and an in game resource pack. The Digital Deluxe Edition adds the Dark Alchemy Armor Set, Dark Alchemy Blade, Dark Alchemy Bow Scales, Dark Alchemy Catalyst, another resource pack, a digital mini artbook, and the official digital soundtrack. Santa Monica notes that the in game items are unlocked through normal story progression rather than being immediately available when players start. Physical Standard Edition preorder bonuses are provided through a download code.

The more substantial reveal is the Serpent Bow. Fully pressing the aim trigger activates a precision mode with greater accuracy and draw distance. Specific body parts can be targeted to impair enemy movement or attacks, opening opportunities for melee follow ups, while charging the weapon allows Faye to stack as many as 5 arrows into a single volley. That ability can work with Phranque’s power to launch enemies into the air, giving Faye another way to extend combinations rather than stopping combat to use a separate ranged system.

A half press shifts the bow into a more mobile hip fire stance built around short range clusters of arrows. Santa Monica says this mode can juggle airborne enemies and continue combos while Faye moves between weapons and abilities. Different arrow types add rapid fire, explosive, and multiple target options, while unlockable bow skills further expand the weapon. The 2 trigger states are therefore not simply alternate aiming sensitivities. They are separate combat functions built around positioning and combo flow.

Customization extends beyond the bow itself. Serpent Scales change its appearance and provide unique perks that alter its specialization, while the Blade modifies Faye’s sword and Catalysts channel different forms of Everywhen magic. Armor contributes its own stats, perks, and visual options. This builds on the faster, more agile combat direction Santa Monica has previously shown for Faye, whose movement and aerial abilities already distinguish her from Kratos. Earlier looks at how God of War Laufey is expanding Faye’s role explored how the game runs alongside God of War 2018 while revealing parts of her story that previously existed only through memories and clues.

The new footage also gives another glimpse of the Everywhen, the afterlife setting where Faye’s journey takes place. Santa Monica has not yet detailed the full progression structure or how extensively the different weapon perks can reshape character builds, but the Serpent Bow reveal makes clear that Laufey is not simply transplanting Kratos’ existing combat system onto a different protagonist. Faye’s fighting style is being built around faster transitions between range, melee, movement, and magical abilities.

The Serpent Bow may be the clearest indication yet of how Santa Monica plans to make Faye mechanically distinct. The important difference is not simply that she uses a bow. It is how quickly the weapon moves between precision attacks, close range pressure, enemy control, and combo extensions without separating ranged combat from the rest of the system.

That should help Laufey avoid feeling like God of War with a different character model. Kratos’ modern combat is built around weight and deliberate impact, while Faye is increasingly being presented through mobility, adaptability, and rapid weapon transitions. The February release will show whether those differences are enough to give this chapter its own identity.

Does Faye’s Serpent Bow combat look different enough from Kratos to make God of War Laufey feel like its own experience?
