Final Fantasy VII Revelation Gets Extended Gameplay Showcase at September 3 State of Play
Square Enix is preparing another major showcase for Final Fantasy VII Revelation, with PlayStation confirming that the final chapter of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy will close the next State of Play presentation on September 3 with an extended look at its enormous world. The showcase arrives only days after Square Enix revealed the game's Weapons, expanded exploration and new combat mechanics at Gamescom 2026, suggesting the publisher is accelerating its information rollout ahead of the Spring 2027 launch. PlayStation describes the segment specifically as an "extended look at the vast world of Final Fantasy VII Revelation."
The State of Play begins on September 3 at 6:00 AM PT, 9:00 AM ET, 3:00 PM CEST and 10:00 PM JST, corresponding to 9:00 PM in Taiwan. The broadcast will feature updates and announcements from PlayStation Studios alongside third party developers before concluding with Final Fantasy VII Revelation. A separate State of Play Japan presentation will immediately follow, hosted by Yuki Kaji and focused on upcoming games from studios across Japan and Asia. Both presentations will stream through PlayStation's YouTube and Twitch channels.
Sony and Square Enix have not specified exactly what the extended Revelation presentation will contain beyond the focus on its world. That distinction is important because the game has already received a substantial gameplay reveal during Gamescom Opening Night Live. The latest trailer, titled The Planet's Crisis, showed Cloud and his companions traveling aboard the Highwind while enormous Weapons awaken across the Planet, expanding the scale of the final chapter far beyond the regional structure of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
The Gamescom footage provided new looks at Ruby Weapon, Emerald Weapon and Ultima Weapon, reimagining some of the most memorable encounters from the original Final Fantasy VII as massive modern battles. Square Enix also revealed Typhon as a new Summon alongside additional traversal mechanics and broader open world exploration.
The Highwind represents one of the largest changes to exploration. Revelation allows Cloud and the party to travel through the world aboard the airship and chart their own course across an environment Square Enix describes as the largest adventure in the trilogy. The game's official description confirms that players will fly across the world, explore extensive locations and continue toward the final confrontation with Sephiroth as Meteor threatens the Planet and the conflict surrounding Shinra reaches its conclusion. Square Enix currently lists the game for simultaneous release across PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X and S and PC.
Combat is also undergoing another evolution. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth already expanded the hybrid action and command system through Synergy Skills and Synergy Abilities, but Revelation introduces the FITS system, which allows characters to equip job inspired outfits that provide new combat capabilities. Breakdown of the FITS combat system, director Naoki Hamaguchi believes simply carrying Rebirth's battle mechanics into another game would not provide enough progression for the trilogy's finale.
Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind also become fully playable party members after appearing primarily as supporting characters in Rebirth. Vincent combines firearm combat with transformations, while Cid uses his spear to alternate between targeted attacks and wider battlefield control. Together with FITS, returning Materia systems and the expanded party structure, Revelation is positioning its combat as another major evolution rather than a straightforward continuation of Rebirth.
The September showcase comes at an important point in Square Enix's rollout. Revelation was officially announced during Summer Game Fest in June, followed by another major trailer at Gamescom in August. The upcoming State of Play therefore represents the third substantial promotional beat within approximately 3 months. Square Enix has already confirmed that the game will launch simultaneously across platforms in Spring 2027, during the 30th anniversary year of the original Final Fantasy VII.
That simultaneous launch is itself a major change from the earlier entries. Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth initially launched as PlayStation exclusives before reaching additional platforms later, while Revelation will arrive on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X and S, Steam, Epic Games Store and Xbox on PC from day 1. The broader launch forms part of Square Enix's wider multiplatform strategy and gives the final chapter access to the entire current console and PC ecosystem simultaneously.
The game also remains on schedule despite the increasingly difficult development environment surrounding modern AAA projects. As explored in previous analysis of Square Enix's development strategy for Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the company has maintained much of the same development structure between Rebirth and Revelation rather than rebuilding its production pipeline for every entry. That continuity has allowed Square Enix to target 3 major Final Fantasy VII games across approximately 10 years, including 2 enormous world based sequels.
Square Enix has not yet announced an exact release date beyond Spring 2027. The publisher's latest financial outlook also remains conservative despite Revelation approaching launch, although the game remains firmly positioned as one of the company's most important upcoming releases. Square Enix continues to maintain the Spring 2027 window as the trilogy approaches its conclusion.
Giving Final Fantasy VII Revelation the closing position at State of Play only a week after its Gamescom showcase suggests Square Enix is moving into a much more aggressive phase of the game's marketing campaign.
The phrase "extended look at the vast world" is especially interesting. Rebirth already created an enormous interpretation of Final Fantasy VII's world, but Revelation now has the Highwind and considerably fewer geographical restrictions. That potentially changes exploration from moving between large connected regions into something much closer to a genuinely global adventure.
Square Enix has not confirmed exactly what September 3 will show, so expecting a specific Weapon battle, location or story reveal would be premature. What is confirmed is that Revelation will receive significantly more screen time than another conventional trailer, making this potentially our best look yet at how the final chapter expands beyond Rebirth.
What do you want Square Enix to show during the extended Final Fantasy VII Revelation State of Play, more Highwind exploration, the Weapons, new combat systems or another major story reveal?
