Square Enix Keeps Forecast Cautious as Final Fantasy VII Revelation Holds Spring 2027 Launch

Square Enix has delivered a strong start to its fiscal year, but the company is maintaining a notably conservative full year outlook even as Final Fantasy VII Revelation prepares to conclude the Remake trilogy in Spring 2027. In its latest financial results, Square Enix reported 78.423 billion yen in net sales for the 3 months ended June 30, 2026, representing growth of 32.3% compared with the same period last year. Operating income reached 17.008 billion yen, up 88.6%, while ordinary income increased 172.4% to 18.766 billion yen. Profit attributable to owners of the parent climbed 175.7% to 13.244 billion yen.

Despite that strong opening quarter, Square Enix has left its forecast for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2027 unchanged. The publisher continues to expect 298 billion yen in net sales, only 0.1% above the 297.661 billion yen recorded during the previous fiscal year. Operating income is projected at 49 billion yen, representing a 10.5% decline, while ordinary income is expected to fall 24% to 49 billion yen. Profit attributable to owners of the parent is forecast at 31 billion yen, up 4.7%. The same 298 billion yen revenue outlook was already presented by Square Enix in May, meaning the company has not raised expectations despite its strong first quarter performance.

The Digital Entertainment business was one of the major contributors to the quarter. Square Enix specifically credited solid performance from Final Fantasy VII Rebirth following its June 3 release for Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows, alongside The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales and stronger catalog sales. This is particularly significant for Square Enix because its current medium term strategy has emphasized bringing major franchises to more platforms instead of relying heavily on individual console ecosystems.

Attention now turns toward Final Fantasy VII Revelation, which Square Enix officially announced for Spring 2027. The final chapter will launch simultaneously for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, marking the broadest day 1 platform strategy of the entire trilogy. As previously look Final Fantasy VII Revelation and Square Enix's evolving AAA development strategy, Creative Studio 1 has maintained much of the same development team and technology between Rebirth and Revelation, allowing production to continue without rebuilding the project foundation for every installment.

Square Enix's unchanged fiscal forecast has created additional discussion around whether Revelation could launch before or after March 31, 2027. The current Spring 2027 window technically allows either possibility, since a release during April or May would fall into Square Enix's following fiscal year. However, the financial forecast alone does not confirm that Revelation has moved beyond March. Square Enix already had internal visibility into the game's development and expected launch timing when it issued its original FY2027 forecast in May, before publicly announcing Revelation in June. The unchanged forecast therefore shows caution from management, but it should not be interpreted as confirmation of a delay.

The broader picture surrounding Revelation remains positive. Square Enix has officially positioned the game as the conclusion to the Remake trilogy, while director Naoki Hamaguchi has explained that the development team was already planning Revelation while completing Rebirth. The finale will expand the trilogy's world around the Highwind and provide significantly greater freedom of exploration while resolving the story surrounding Cloud, Sephiroth, Aerith, Zack, and the larger mysteries introduced throughout Remake and Rebirth. Revelation is expected to finally resolve whether the trilogy should be understood purely as a remake or something closer to a sequel.

Square Enix's forecast is interesting precisely because it remains so conservative after an excellent first quarter. Revenue increased 32.3% and operating income jumped 88.6%, yet management still expects almost no full year revenue growth. That suggests Square Enix is leaving itself considerable room to manage uncertainty across the remainder of FY2027 rather than immediately raising expectations.

For Final Fantasy VII Revelation, however, the numbers should not be treated as evidence that the game has slipped beyond March 2027. Spring remains the official window, and Square Enix would have been planning its financial year around Revelation long before the public announcement. A March release would also carry powerful significance, placing the conclusion of the trilogy within the fiscal year that includes Final Fantasy VII's 30th anniversary.

The more important signal may be Final Fantasy VII Rebirth itself. Its expanded release across Xbox, Nintendo Switch 2, and Windows is already contributing to Square Enix's growth, which strengthens the company's case for launching Revelation simultaneously across every major platform. If the finale can combine that larger addressable audience with the anticipation surrounding the trilogy's conclusion, it could become one of Square Enix's most commercially important releases of 2027.

Do you think Final Fantasy VII Revelation will launch before March 31, 2027, or is Square Enix more likely to target April or May for the trilogy finale?
