Final Fantasy VII Revelation Gamescom Trailer Unleashes Ruby, Emerald and Ultima Weapon

Square Enix has brought Final Fantasy VII Revelation back into the spotlight at Gamescom 2026 with a new trailer titled The Planet's Crisis, providing an extended look at the massive Weapons, the new Typhon Summon, expanded traversal and the job inspired FITS system that will reshape combat in the final chapter of the Remake trilogy. Final Fantasy VII Revelation remains scheduled for Spring 2027 and will launch simultaneously on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC through Steam, Epic Games Store and Xbox on PC.

The biggest focus of the new trailer is the Weapons, the enormous guardians created by the Planet to respond when the world faces an existential threat. The footage provides new looks at Ruby Weapon, Emerald Weapon and Ultima Weapon, with Cloud and his companions confronting these creatures across dramatically different environments. Battles extend from the desert into aerial encounters and even beneath the ocean, suggesting Square Enix is turning encounters that were comparatively limited in the original 1997 game into much larger cinematic and gameplay sequences. Some Weapons will also become exceptionally difficult endgame encounters designed as homages to their original superboss versions.

This fits directly with Square Enix's previously discussed approach to Revelation's endgame. Director Naoki Hamaguchi has already said that the finale will include substantial optional challenges more powerful than the final boss, including the Weapons and Knights of the Round. Revelation's expanded postgame challenges showed how the development team wants players to continue strengthening their characters after completing the main story rather than simply reaching the level cap and restarting through Hard Mode.

Typhon also makes its first major appearance as a new Summon. The bizarre creature originally appeared as Typhon in the 1997 Final Fantasy VII and returns with a dramatically modernized presentation. The Gamescom trailer places the Summon alongside Revelation's expanded combat systems, showing that Square Enix is continuing to restore some of the original game's strangest and most memorable late game content rather than concentrating exclusively on its major story events.

The new footage also gives players a clearer look at FITS, or Function Integrated Tactical Suitwear, the new combat customization system designed to push Final Fantasy VII Rebirth's battle mechanics further. Cloud appears using a Warrior inspired FIT while Tifa is shown as a Black Mage. These outfits are not simply cosmetic changes. Equipping a FIT provides additional abilities and specialized battlefield roles inspired by the traditional Job system found throughout Final Fantasy. Square Enix previously confirmed that the system will allow characters to move outside their usual combat specialties, something explored in our detailed look at how FITS expands Final Fantasy VII Rebirth's combat system.

Exploration receives more attention as well. The trailer shows Cloud and the party moving through the world using Chocobos, parachutes and grappling hooks, reinforcing Square Enix's goal of creating the largest and most freely explorable world in the trilogy. The Highwind will become a central part of that design, allowing players to travel across the Planet and revisit regions introduced in Rebirth from entirely new perspectives. Hamaguchi has previously explained that players will gain access to the Highwind relatively early, opening islands and previously inaccessible areas while allowing optional content to be approached with considerably more freedom. Revelation's Highwind and world exploration could therefore become one of the biggest structural differences between the final chapter and Rebirth.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation concludes the trilogy that began with Final Fantasy VII Remake in 2020 and continued with Rebirth in 2024. Cloud and his companions are now facing Meteor, the awakening Weapons and Sephiroth as he approaches the final stage of his plan. Square Enix describes Revelation as the largest adventure in the Remake project, with the complete party finally assembled and the entire Planet becoming part of the journey. The game also arrives during the original Final Fantasy VII's 30th anniversary year, giving Square Enix an unusually symbolic window to conclude a project that has effectively spanned an entire console generation.

The Weapons may become one of Revelation's strongest opportunities to demonstrate how far this remake project has evolved. Ruby and Emerald Weapon were legendary challenges in the original game, but modern hardware and Revelation's hybrid combat system allow Square Enix to turn them into battles operating across land, sea and air rather than simply recreating the encounters with newer graphics.

FITS may ultimately have an even bigger impact on gameplay. Rebirth already delivered one of Square Enix's strongest action RPG combat systems, so Revelation needs more than additional abilities to feel like a meaningful evolution. Allowing Cloud, Tifa and the rest of the party to adopt roles inspired by classic Final Fantasy Jobs could dramatically increase build variety without abandoning the identities that make each character unique. Combine that with the Highwind, superboss Weapons and a world designed around greater freedom, and Revelation is increasingly looking like a culmination of the entire trilogy rather than simply its third chapter.

Which Gamescom reveal has you more excited for Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the return of Ruby and Emerald Weapon, Typhon, or the new FITS Job system?
