PHYSINT Moves From PlayStation to Xbox After Sony Cancels Kojima Partnership

Hideo Kojima's PHYSINT has undergone a major publishing change, with Xbox taking over the action espionage project after Sony Interactive Entertainment ended its collaboration with Kojima Productions earlier this year. Development is continuing, but a game originally introduced as a major PlayStation partnership will now be published by Xbox.

The change was confirmed through separate statements from PlayStation, Kojima Productions and Xbox. Sony said that after careful consideration it had made the difficult decision to step away from collaborating with Kojima Productions on PHYSINT, while emphasizing that its wider relationship with Hideo Kojima remains strong. Sony did not provide a reason for ending the project.

Kojima provided considerably more detail about the timing. According to the creator, Kojima Productions unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios in mid June 2026 that Sony would cancel PHYSINT. The studio then spent approximately 3 months searching for another partner rather than abandoning the project.

"As confirmed earlier through our official channels, in mid June of this year, we unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel the PHYSINT project."

Kojima described PHYSINT as an important project both personally and for Kojima Productions, explaining that the team was determined to continue development and began speaking with potential partners across several industries. Those discussions eventually led back to Microsoft, which was already collaborating with Kojima Productions on the experimental horror project OD.

Xbox has now officially confirmed that it will publish PHYSINT. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said the company is honored that Kojima selected Xbox as the project's new partner and highlighted his willingness to challenge established conventions as matching the type of creativity Microsoft wants to support.

"Creators have choices about where and how they bring their ideas to life. We are honored that Kojima san has chosen Xbox to work with Kojima Productions on PHYSINT."

The agreement significantly expands the existing relationship between the 2 companies. Kojima Productions is already developing OD with Xbox Game Studios, while PHYSINT now gives Microsoft another major Kojima project built around a much more established gameplay genre. Xbox and Kojima Productions also confirmed that their relationship will expand beyond games into film and television projects, although no specific productions have yet been announced.

PHYSINT was originally announced during Sony's January 2024 State of Play presentation as a collaboration between Kojima Productions and PlayStation Studios. Kojima described the project as a new generation action espionage experience that would blur the boundaries between games and cinema, marking his return to the genre that defined much of his career through Metal Gear.

Development was still at an early stage when Kojima Productions revealed its first PHYSINT cast members. Charlee Fraser, Ma Dong Seok and Minami Hamabe were confirmed for the project, alongside early visual material created using highly detailed performance capture technology. Kojima previously indicated that PHYSINT could still require another 5 to 6 years of development from its 2025 status, making it one of the studio's longest term projects.

Despite the publisher change, Kojima says development itself has not stopped. Xbox and Kojima Productions both describe PHYSINT as moving forward, with Kojima continuing to position it as an attempt to redefine the action espionage genre rather than simply recreate Metal Gear under another name.

One important question remains unanswered: platform availability. Xbox has confirmed that Xbox Game Studios will publish PHYSINT, but neither Microsoft nor Kojima Productions has announced its final platform lineup. There is currently no official confirmation that the game will be exclusive to Xbox consoles, nor has a PC version or PlayStation release been formally detailed under the new publishing arrangement. Any platform assumptions beyond Xbox becoming the publisher therefore remain speculation.

The move is particularly striking considering Kojima's long relationship with Sony. Death Stranding originally launched through Sony Interactive Entertainment, Death Stranding 2 continued that partnership, and PHYSINT had been positioned as another major collaboration. At the same time, Kojima Productions has increasingly worked across platform holders, with OD already placing the studio inside Microsoft's publishing ecosystem.

That existing Xbox relationship may have made Microsoft a natural alternative once Sony withdrew. Kojima has previously spoken about how former Xbox leadership supported the unusual concept behind OD when other companies struggled to understand it, and OD remains one of Kojima Productions' most experimental projects. PHYSINT now gives Xbox both sides of Kojima's current development philosophy: an experimental horror project and a large scale return to action espionage.

Sony losing PHYSINT is significant not simply because another publisher gained a Kojima game, but because PlayStation originally helped introduce the project as one of its long term prestige collaborations. Sony clearly made a deliberate decision to withdraw, yet neither company has explained what changed between the 2024 announcement and the cancellation notice in June 2026.

Xbox was in an unusually strong position to respond. The company already had an active relationship with Kojima Productions through OD, meaning the 2 sides were not beginning negotiations from zero. Microsoft now gets a project directly associated with Kojima's return to the genre that made his name, while Kojima Productions keeps PHYSINT alive without restarting development under an entirely unfamiliar partner.

The biggest detail still missing is where players will actually be able to play it. Xbox publishing the game does not automatically tell us whether PHYSINT will be exclusive, multiplatform or follow Microsoft's increasingly flexible release strategy. Until Microsoft or Kojima Productions names the platforms, that question remains open.

Is Xbox the right new home for PHYSINT, and do you think Microsoft will keep Kojima's action espionage game exclusive or eventually release it across multiple platforms?
