Nintendo Switch 2 Finally Gets Docked VRR With Firmware 23.0.0
Nintendo has finally enabled Variable Refresh Rate support for Nintendo Switch 2 while playing in TV mode, addressing one of the most notable display features missing from the console at launch. The functionality arrives with system firmware 23.0.0, allowing compatible games to synchronize their output with the refresh rate of a supported television. According to Nintendo, players must also update the Nintendo Switch 2 Dock before the feature can be enabled.
VRR allows the display refresh rate to follow the frame rate being produced by the game instead of operating at a fixed refresh target. This can reduce visible screen tearing and improve the presentation of games with fluctuating performance, particularly when a title cannot consistently maintain targets such as 30 FPS or 60 FPS. For Nintendo Switch 2, the technology also gives developers more flexibility to implement 40 FPS modes and unlocked frame rates without the uneven frame delivery associated with fixed refresh intervals.
Docked VRR had originally been expected as part of the Switch 2 display feature set before Nintendo clarified that the technology would initially be limited to the integrated screen. The hardware has now gained the missing TV mode functionality through software and a corresponding Dock update, bringing the external display experience closer to what Switch 2 already offered in handheld mode.
Early testing from Digital Foundry's John Linneman indicates that Nintendo has implemented a surprisingly capable VRR system. In 60 Hz output mode, Switch 2 reportedly supports a VRR range between 40 Hz and 60 Hz. When operating at 120 Hz, the system supports full low frame rate compensation, allowing duplicated frames to keep compatible displays inside their VRR operating range when game performance falls beneath the normal threshold.
That implementation could be particularly valuable for games that cannot maintain a locked 60 FPS. A title running around 40 FPS to 50 FPS can use the variable refresh window to produce smoother frame delivery, while 120 Hz output combined with low frame rate compensation creates additional flexibility when performance falls further. It also opens the door for developers to target 40 FPS presentation modes that provide a middle ground between the visual quality of 30 FPS and the responsiveness of 60 FPS.
There is an important limitation. Games need to support the new TV mode implementation before they can benefit from it. Linneman reported that Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour was compatible during initial testing, meaning existing releases may require patches from their developers. Nintendo confirms the same requirement in its system documentation, stating that both the software and connected television must support VRR before the console can adjust its output refresh rate to match game performance.
Nintendo has also expanded the system beyond VRR with firmware 23.0.0. The update introduces additional GameChat functionality, new Virtual Game Card controls, system transfers between Nintendo Switch 2 consoles, accessibility improvements, expanded video output information and several general stability changes. Handheld Mode Boost can also be controlled more conveniently through Quick Settings.
The timing is particularly useful as Nintendo Switch 2 begins handling increasingly demanding software. New rendering technology such as Unreal Engine 5.8 and its Lumen Lite implementation is already targeting improved performance on Nintendo's hardware, while technically ambitious games will increasingly need flexible tools to balance image quality, frame rate and power limitations. VRR does not create additional GPU performance, but it can make unavoidable frame rate fluctuations substantially less disruptive to the player.
Docked VRR should have been available much earlier, but its implementation gives Nintendo Switch 2 developers an important tool as games begin pushing the hardware harder. The biggest opportunity may not be titles already running at a stable 60 FPS, but games operating between traditional performance targets. A well tuned 40 FPS mode paired with VRR can offer noticeably better responsiveness than 30 FPS without requiring developers to consistently reach 60 FPS, making it particularly attractive for ambitious ports and visually demanding games. The technology is now available, but developer adoption will determine how valuable it becomes in everyday use.
