NVIDIA Hotfix 616.86 Fixes Browser Flickering and Remote Desktop Black Screens
NVIDIA has released GeForce Hotfix Display Driver 616.86 for Windows 10 and Windows 11, addressing 3 problems affecting browser rendering, virtual displays, and Remote Desktop sessions after recent GeForce driver updates.
According to NVIDIA, Hotfix 616.86 is based on Game Ready Driver 616.64 and specifically fixes intermittent flickering that can appear in browsers when visiting certain websites. It also resolves an issue introduced with Driver 616.56 that prevented virtual displays from being created and another regression that could cause Remote Desktop Protocol sessions to display a black screen.
The virtual display correction could be particularly relevant for users running software or hardware that relies on secondary virtual monitors, while the RDP fix targets systems used for remote access where users could previously connect only to encounter a black display.
However, the browser flickering correction should not be confused with the separate monitor flickering problem reported after Driver 616.56. Some GeForce users running displays at 8 bit color depth have experienced intermittent flashing, brightness changes, and display flickering. As covered in our previous investigation into NVIDIA Driver 616.56, switching affected displays to 10 bit output or enabling Windows Automatic Color Management has helped on some systems, while others have resorted to rolling back their driver.
Hotfix 616.86 does not list a fix for that broader display issue, meaning users affected by 8 bit monitor flickering should not assume this release will resolve it. NVIDIA had already been testing a correction, but it has not yet been included in the published Hotfix 616.86 change list.
NVIDIA also makes an important distinction between Hotfix releases and standard Game Ready drivers. Hotfix drivers are optional releases that go through a shorter quality assurance process and are intended to deliver targeted corrections before those changes are incorporated into the next official driver. Users who are not experiencing any of the 3 listed problems can therefore remain on Game Ready Driver 616.64 and wait for the fixes to arrive through a future certified release.
Hotfix 616.86 is available directly through NVIDIA Customer Care rather than as a normal Game Ready update.
The unresolved 8 bit flickering issue remains the more visible concern because it can affect normal desktop and gaming use rather than a specific application or workflow. NVIDIA clearly continues to clean up regressions introduced around the 616 driver branch, but users with stable systems still have little reason to install an optional Hotfix unless one of its targeted fixes directly applies to them.
Are you still experiencing monitor flickering on Driver 616.56 or 616.64, and has Hotfix 616.86 changed anything on your system?
