Next Xbox May Keep Disc Support as Sony Ends New Game Discs

Microsoft may preserve disc compatibility with its next generation Xbox console, potentially giving players a way to carry physical libraries forward while Sony prepares to end disc production for new PlayStation games in January 2028. The information remains unconfirmed and may reflect plans considered before the recent Xbox leadership and business reset.

During a recent Digital Foundry Q&A, John Linneman said he had heard from multiple sources that Microsoft planned to continue supporting discs, primarily to maintain backward compatibility rather than protect future physical retail sales. The proposed solution could involve an optional external optical drive or another method capable of verifying existing Xbox discs. Microsoft has not announced the final hardware design or confirmed that Project Helix will include any form of disc reader.

This approach would support Microsoft’s official commitment to keeping games from 4 generations of Xbox playable on future hardware. The company has confirmed that Project Helix is being developed around a custom AMD processor, PC game compatibility, advanced DirectX technology, and a major increase in ray tracing capability. Early development hardware is scheduled to reach studios during 2027, but Microsoft has not disclosed the console’s release date, price, storage configuration, or physical media strategy.

A possible optical drive could also connect with Microsoft’s reported disc to digital system. Leaked developer information suggests Xbox is preparing a program that would grant a digital license when a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series disc is inserted into a compatible console. The entitlement would remain connected to the disc and the player account, allowing ownership to transfer when the physical copy is sold or traded. The planned public testing schedule has reportedly been delayed, and Microsoft has not formally launched the feature.

The latest rumor presents a different possibility from earlier reports suggesting Project Helix could launch as a fully digital console. Both ideas could still coexist if Microsoft releases a digital base system with an optional drive, allowing players to choose whether physical compatibility justifies the additional cost.

Sony has taken a clearer position. The company officially confirmed that new PlayStation games will stop receiving physical discs beginning in January 2028. Games released before that deadline will remain supported, while future titles will be distributed through the PlayStation Store and retailers in digital formats. Sony has not confirmed whether its next console will support existing PlayStation discs through an internal or optional drive.

Retaining disc support could provide Xbox with a meaningful competitive advantage, especially after years of uncertainty surrounding the value of its console hardware. Microsoft has invested heavily in backward compatibility, and abandoning physical libraries would weaken one of the platform’s strongest historical features.

An optional external drive may be the most practical solution. Microsoft could reduce the cost of the primary console while allowing collectors and longtime Xbox players to access compatible discs from previous generations. A secure disc to digital system could further extend those libraries across Xbox consoles, PCs, and handheld devices.

However, this remains a rumor connected to plans that may have existed before the latest Xbox restructuring. Until Microsoft reveals the final Project Helix design, players should not assume that disc support has survived the company’s changing financial and hardware strategy.

Would continued disc support make you choose the next Xbox over PlayStation, or have you already moved completely to digital games?
