Microsoft Says UK Needs More Data Centers as Slough Residents Push Back
Microsoft wants to build another data center in Slough, England, saying the UK will need far more computing capacity as cloud services and AI continue to expand. In Slough, though, that argument is starting to run into a more local question: how much infrastructure should one community be expected to absorb?
The proposed site is the former Langley Business Centre near Langley railway station. An earlier data center plan was approved there in 2021, but that permission has since expired, so Microsoft will need to submit a fresh application, expected during autumn 2026.
At a community session held on September 12, Microsoft outlined plans for a roughly 15 m high facility with an electrical substation, supporting infrastructure, EV capable parking, and public art. The company says projects like this are becoming necessary because data centers increasingly underpin cloud applications, online services, gaming, banking, healthcare, and AI workloads.
That message is not landing cleanly with everyone in Slough. A petition asking the council to pause further data center development has gathered around 600 signatures, with residents citing noise, heat, electricity demand, and the cumulative effect of adding more facilities to the area. Councillor Chandra Muvvala has also questioned whether large technology companies should be doing more for the communities hosting this infrastructure, pointing to improvements such as parks, tree planting, and other visible local investment.
Microsoft says the project will be subject to environmental studies covering air quality, noise, climate, townscape, and daylight. It has also been promoting its broader Community First Infrastructure Initiative, which focuses on energy costs, local jobs, skills programs, water use, and community investment around major data center projects. The timing matters because the scale of AI infrastructure is rising quickly. Modern AI clusters require far more electricity and cooling than traditional server deployments, and companies are already redesigning power systems around those demands. NVIDIA and Google are moving toward 800 V DC power architectures as AI data centers run into power limits.
Slough is therefore dealing with a problem that many other cities are likely to face soon. Data centers are becoming essential infrastructure, but they are also becoming harder to treat as invisible background technology.
The argument for building more data centers is easy to understand. AI, cloud services, gaming, and digital platforms all depend on them. The harder part is deciding where that infrastructure goes and what the surrounding community gets in return. That is where projects like this will increasingly be judged. Not just on how much computing capacity they add, but on whether the people living nearby see a fair trade between national digital growth and local impact.
