Bill Skarsgård Leads PHYSINT as Hideo Kojima Thanks Xbox for Backing His Vision
Hideo Kojima has confirmed Bill Skarsgård as the lead actor in PHYSINT, giving the action espionage project its protagonist only days after Xbox officially took over publishing duties from PlayStation.
The announcement came during the Xbox Tokyo Game Show 2026 Broadcast, where Kojima provided updates on both PHYSINT and OD. Kojima Productions also released a new PHYSINT poster featuring Skarsgård alongside Charlee Fraser through its official social channels.

Kojima said Skarsgård will take the lead role in PHYSINT and explained that the collaboration grew from mutual respect for each other's work. Costume fittings, character scans, and camera tests involving Skarsgård and Fraser were completed earlier in 2026, with Kojima saying those sessions gave him significantly more confidence in the direction of the project. Kojima Productions now officially lists Skarsgård alongside Fraser, Don Lee, and Minami Hamabe as part of the cast.
Skarsgård is best known internationally for playing Pennywise in IT and IT Chapter Two, while his more recent performances include Nosferatu, John Wick: Chapter 4, Barbarian, and The Crow. His role in PHYSINT has not yet been named, and Kojima has not revealed details about the protagonist's background or the game's story.
PHYSINT is Kojima Productions' 3rd original IP and is being positioned by Kojima as the culmination of his 40 year career in game development. The studio says the project will combine advanced technology with performance capture and a major film cast in an attempt to establish a new benchmark for the action espionage genre.
The announcement is particularly notable because PHYSINT was still associated with PlayStation only months ago. Sony ended its involvement with the project in June 2026, after which Kojima Productions spent around 3 months seeking a new publishing partner. Xbox officially stepped in on September 9, expanding a relationship that already existed through OD. Additional reporting later indicated that budget growth, production delays, and exclusivity concerns contributed to PlayStation leaving PHYSINT, although Sony itself did not publicly provide those specific reasons.
Kojima used the Tokyo Game Show appearance to thank Xbox for supporting Kojima Productions' creative direction and continuing the relationship into PHYSINT. Xbox and Kojima Productions have also confirmed that their partnership will expand beyond games into film and television projects.
OD is progressing alongside it. Kojima said performance capture and ADR work resumed during 2026 after being paused during the SAG strike, with Sophia Lillis and Hunter Schafer continuing performance capture. The studio describes production as proceeding on schedule, although no release date has been announced.
One detail remains unresolved for PHYSINT. Xbox is now the publisher, but neither Microsoft nor Kojima Productions has announced the game's final platform lineup. An Xbox published project should therefore not automatically be described as an Xbox console exclusive until its platforms are formally confirmed.
Bill Skarsgård gives PHYSINT a recognizable face, but the timing of the announcement may be even more important. Less than 2 weeks after Xbox was confirmed as the new publisher, Kojima Productions is already presenting new casting, artwork, and a stronger public message around the project's future. It suggests the publisher change has not pushed PHYSINT back into a complete creative reset.
The combination of Skarsgård, Fraser, Don Lee, and Minami Hamabe also reinforces what Kojima has been saying since PHYSINT was first announced. This is not being positioned simply as another stealth game. He is once again trying to blur the boundary between cinematic production and interactive action espionage.
The larger question is how much PHYSINT will evolve now that Xbox rather than PlayStation is helping bring that vision to market.
What do you think about Bill Skarsgård leading PHYSINT, and who would you like Kojima to cast next?
