Marvel’s Spider Man 2 Adds Enhanced PSSR Nearly 3 Years After Launch

Marvel’s Spider Man 2 has received another major technical update nearly 3 years after its original PlayStation 5 release, adding native support for Sony’s Enhanced PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution technology on PlayStation 5 Pro alongside new content for both console and PC players.

Insomniac Games confirmed that update 1.005.000 introduces Enhanced PSSR support on PlayStation 5 Pro, Power Saver mode across PlayStation 5 consoles, and 2 additional suits for Peter Parker. These include the Fresh Start suit inspired by Spider Man: Brand New Day and a costume based on MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls.

The Enhanced PSSR addition is the most substantial technical improvement in the update. Frequently described as PSSR 2.0, Sony officially refers to the technology as upgraded or Enhanced PSSR. It uses a redesigned neural network and algorithm developed through Sony and AMD’s Project Amethyst collaboration, targeting sharper image reconstruction, improved stability, and fewer visual artifacts on PlayStation 5 Pro.

PlayStation 5 Pro already includes a system option that can apply the improved upscaler to games supporting the original PSSR implementation. However, dedicated support from Insomniac indicates that Marvel’s Spider Man 2 can now formally recognize and use the enhanced technology rather than depending entirely on the broader console compatibility setting.

The update arrives almost 3 years after Marvel’s Spider Man 2 originally launched for PlayStation 5 on October 20, 2023. The game later reached PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store on January 30, 2025.

PC players have not been excluded from the new content. Update 2.727.0.0 adds both the Fresh Start and MARVEL Tōkon suits to the PC version, maintaining cosmetic parity with PlayStation 5. Enhanced PSSR and Power Saver mode remain console specific features, while the PC edition continues offering its own selection of NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR, Intel XeSS, frame generation, and ray tracing options.

Continued PC support is notable following reports that Sony may be reconsidering future PC releases for major single player PlayStation franchises. This remains a reported strategic shift rather than a publicly confirmed decision to abandon Steam or the Epic Games Store completely. Updating an existing PC release does not necessarily indicate that upcoming titles will receive PC versions, but it shows that previously released games can continue receiving content and technical maintenance.

The update also serves as cross promotion for 2 major Marvel releases. MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls launches on August 6, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and PC, while Insomniac’s Marvel’s Wolverine arrives on September 15 exclusively for PlayStation 5.

Enhanced PSSR support gives PlayStation 5 Pro owners a meaningful reason to revisit Marvel’s Spider Man 2, particularly if Insomniac’s dedicated integration improves image stability during fast movement, web swinging, detailed reflections, and dense city environments.

The simultaneous PC content update is equally important. Even as Sony reportedly reevaluates its future PC strategy, maintaining feature parity for existing releases protects player confidence and prevents those versions from feeling abandoned.

Marvel’s Spider Man 2 may no longer be Insomniac’s primary development focus, but this update demonstrates that mature single player games can still benefit from new rendering technology and carefully timed content long after launch.

Would Enhanced PSSR convince you to replay Marvel’s Spider Man 2 on PlayStation 5 Pro, or are the 2 new suits the more interesting addition?
