Gamescom Congress 2026 Sets Attendance Record as German President Makes Historic First Visit
Gamescom Congress 2026 concluded with a new attendance record after welcoming more than 1,100 visitors to Cologne, while also marking the first time a German head of state has attended Gamescom. Federal President Frank Walter Steinmeier officially opened the congress on August 27, giving the event additional political significance as gaming continues expanding its influence across culture, education, technology, business and public policy. According to the official Gamescom Congress, the conference featured 85 program items, 165 speakers and 8 stages covering the wider impact of games across society.
"Digital games, taken as a whole, are culturally significant, and therefore they are also significant for our democracy."
— Quote by: Frank Walter Steinmeier, Federal President of Germany.
Steinmeier's appearance represented a historic milestone for Gamescom because no previous German Federal President had attended the event. After opening the congress, he joined discussions examining how games can contribute to democratic participation before touring the wider Gamescom exhibition and meeting developers and members of the gaming community. The visit reflects how gaming has moved beyond being viewed primarily as entertainment and is increasingly becoming part of discussions surrounding education, political participation, digital culture and technological development.
The congress focused heavily on 2 themes titled Democracy as a Playing Field and The Games Effect. Representatives from organizations including the United Nations, Europol and the Red Cross participated alongside game developers, technology companies, researchers and political representatives. Companies and studios represented during the program included Razer, Paintbucket Games, remote control productions and ROTxBLAU, with sessions exploring subjects ranging from education and innovation to health, security and the social influence of interactive media.
The record attendance also came during one of the largest Gamescom events ever organized. Gamescom 2026 welcomed 368,000 visitors from 131 countries, including more than 36,000 trade visitors. A total of 1,743 companies from 66 countries exhibited across approximately 233,000 square meters, while the event generated more than 624 million views across its digital programming. Gamescom Opening Night Live alone surpassed 78 million views.
Gamescom 2026 also produced a major week of gaming announcements and industry activity, including the recently announced Gamescom 2026 Awards, where CD PROJEKT RED and SEGA collected 3 awards each. The event also became a platform for discussions around the future of game development, including Tencent Games Central Tech, which showcased AI technologies spanning animation, gameplay systems and automated testing.
Gamescom Congress is organized by Koelnmesse and game, the German Games Industry Association, with support from the state of North Rhine Westphalia. The organizers describe it as a conference focused on demonstrating the potential of games beyond the traditional entertainment industry, bringing together representatives from gaming, education, science, culture, politics, media and business. Gamescom 2027 is scheduled to return to Cologne from August 25 through August 29, with Gamescom Opening Night Live taking place on August 24.The attendance record is significant, but the German President attending Gamescom for the first time carries considerably more symbolic weight. Gaming has spent decades fighting the perception that it exists separately from traditional culture, education and serious technological development. Having Germany's head of state open a conference centered on the wider impact of games shows how dramatically that perception continues to change.
Gamescom is also evolving beyond a consumer exhibition and announcement stage. With government representatives, international organizations, researchers, developers and technology companies increasingly sharing the same platform, the event is becoming an important meeting point between the gaming industry and the institutions shaping digital society.
Do you think gaming is finally receiving the same cultural and political recognition as film, television and other major entertainment industries?
