Final Fantasy VII Revelation Limits Each Character to 4 FITS Jobs
Final Fantasy VII Revelation will give every playable character access to 4 jobs through its new FITS system, with director Naoki Hamaguchi explaining that modern development requirements made a much larger selection unrealistic for a standalone RPG.
FITS stands for Function Integrated Tactical Suitwear. Each outfit changes the equipped character’s combat role, available moves, and visual appearance while drawing inspiration from traditional Final Fantasy jobs. Square Enix has already shown Cloud using the Warrior role and Tifa appearing as a Black Mage. The system will debut when Final Fantasy VII Revelation launches in Spring 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
Speaking during Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest in Berlin, Hamaguchi said the process reminded him how much more demanding modern game development has become. Older Final Fantasy games could include more than 20 jobs because their characters used simpler pixel artwork and shared animation structures. Revelation uses detailed character models, unique clothing, individual abilities, and specialized animations for every member of its large playable cast.
"It did make me realize all over again how hard it is to develop games these days."

Hamaguchi explained that offering 20 or 30 jobs would be extremely difficult for a standalone title. An ongoing game such as Final Fantasy XIV can introduce additional roles gradually through expansions and updates, while Revelation must deliver its complete job system alongside a massive world, cinematics, story content, enemies, quests, and the trilogy’s final battle.
| FITS Design Element | Final Fantasy VII Revelation Approach |
|---|---|
| Jobs per Character | 4 |
| Job Changes | Available between battles |
| Visual Presentation | Each role includes a unique outfit |
| Combat Effect | New role, moves, and strategic options |
| Confirmed Examples | Cloud as Warrior, Tifa as Black Mage |
| Main Development Challenge | Character specific models, animations, abilities, and balancing |
The smaller number does not necessarily mean the system will lack depth. Hamaguchi said every FITS outfit provides a clearly defined role, giving players more strategic options across the full party. With several playable characters receiving 4 configurations each, the total development workload remains substantial even without matching the job counts found in classic entries.
FITS will also allow characters to move beyond their traditional combat identity. Cloud is normally positioned as a close range frontline fighter, but equipping a Black Mage FITS can add stronger ranged magic options while preserving his established sword combat. The system is designed to expand individual characters instead of replacing their unique mechanics with identical class templates.
Players will only be able to change FITS between battles. Hamaguchi said allowing job changes during combat could make the existing system too complicated because players already switch between party members, issue tactical commands, manage ATB abilities, use magic, activate Synergy Skills, perform Synergy Abilities, and trigger Limit Breaks.
The restriction may help Square Enix maintain readable combat while still expanding customization. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth already gives every character a large collection of weapon abilities, unique mechanics, Materia configurations, and cooperative attacks. Adding dozens of jobs could create excessive overlap, make encounters harder to balance, and leave many abilities unused.
Revelation will also include a separate appearance system, allowing players to use the combat performance of one outfit while displaying another visual design. This means players should not have to abandon a preferred costume simply because a different FITS provides a stronger tactical role. The game will also bring back outfits from Rebirth while introducing additional customization options. The broader costume and endgame plans are detailed in Final Fantasy VII Revelation Brings Back Rebirth Outfits and Expands Its Postgame.
The job system is only 1 part of Square Enix’s expanded finale. The official announcement confirms fully playable versions of Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind, larger regions, new locations, and broader exploration through the Highwind. The project’s scale is also creating challenges for its planned packaged version, as examined in Final Fantasy VII Revelation Physical Release Faces Size Challenges.
Limiting every character to 4 FITS appears restrictive when compared with Final Fantasy V or Final Fantasy XIV, but Revelation is building its jobs on top of an already complex combat system. Each party member has a distinct control style, weapon abilities, Materia options, Synergy mechanics, and unique animations. Every additional FITS therefore creates considerably more work than changing the colors and statistics of a shared pixel character.
The more important measurement will be how dramatically the 4 roles change each character. A smaller selection can still offer meaningful build diversity when every job includes distinctive abilities, visual designs, and tactical strengths. It could also preserve the individuality that makes Cloud, Tifa, Barret, Aerith, Yuffie, Red XIII, Cait Sith, Vincent, and Cid feel different during combat.
Square Enix should prioritize depth over quantity. 4 carefully developed roles that interact properly with the Materia and Synergy systems may provide more practical variety than 20 shallow jobs that players rarely use.
Are 4 detailed FITS jobs per character enough for Final Fantasy VII Revelation, or were you expecting a much larger traditional job system?
