Square Enix Pushes for Final Fantasy VII Revelation Physical Release Despite Size Challenges

Square Enix is still discussing the physical release strategy for Final Fantasy VII Revelation, with director Naoki Hamaguchi actively pushing for some form of packaged edition. The final chapter of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy is expected to become the largest game in the series, creating potential complications involving disc capacity, Nintendo Switch 2 game key cards, platform requirements, manufacturing costs, and the amount of data that can be included inside each retail package.

Speaking with GamesRadar, Hamaguchi confirmed that Square Enix has not finalized the SKU lineup for the game. The company is evaluating several physical and packaged options across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2, although no specific format has been officially confirmed.

"I am working to make the arrangements to allow us to have some kind of physical edition."

Hamaguchi explained that each platform holder applies different rules involving storage, discs, downloads, and packaged products. Nintendo Switch 2 introduces questions surrounding the storage limits of game key cards, while PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S require Square Enix to consider how much data can be placed on physical discs. A packaged release could therefore range from a complete game distributed across multiple discs to a game key card, a download code inside a box, or another hybrid solution.

Platform Main Physical Release Consideration
PlayStation 5 Disc capacity, multiple disc packaging, manufacturing costs, and platform requirements
Xbox Series X|S Disc capacity, retail configuration, and platform specific regulations
Nintendo Switch 2 Game key card storage limits and the possibility of requiring a substantial download

Both Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth launched with 2 discs on PlayStation, allowing Square Enix to provide a more complete physical product than publishers that place only a basic installer on the disc. Final Fantasy VII Revelation could be even more difficult to distribute because it will feature the largest world of the trilogy, expanded versions of locations introduced in Rebirth, new quests, greater vertical exploration, and access to the Highwind and flying Chocobos. Wccftech reports that fitting the full game into a traditional retail configuration could become one of the most significant obstacles facing the publisher.

The expanded world will revisit areas affected by Sephiroth and the approaching Meteor, but these regions will not simply return in their previous form. Hamaguchi has explained that locations such as the Grasslands will provide greater vertical freedom, allowing players to fly across areas and access places that were previously unreachable. These additions are intended to give returning locations a different identity while supporting the game’s position as the conclusion to the trilogy.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is scheduled for Spring 2027 across PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S. The simultaneous multiplatform launch represents a significant shift for a project that began with a strong PlayStation focus, but it also requires Square Enix to prepare several versions under different technical and commercial conditions. The finale must also resolve the major narrative questions surrounding Cloud, Aerith, Zack, Sephiroth, and whether the trilogy functions as a remake, a sequel, or a combination of both interpretations.

Hamaguchi remains supportive of physical media despite the wider industry transition toward digital distribution. He believes packaged products remain culturally important because players collect them, display them, bring them to community events, and use them for autographs. However, his comments also acknowledge that future physical products may not always contain the complete game directly on a disc or cartridge.

Square Enix should prioritize a complete physical edition for Final Fantasy VII Revelation, even if that requires multiple discs or a more expensive collector focused SKU. The Final Fantasy VII Remake project began as a trilogy designed around one of the most important physical releases of the original PlayStation era, making a download code inside an empty box an especially disappointing way to conclude it.

The technical challenge is understandable. Revelation will contain the trilogy’s largest world while launching simultaneously across 4 platforms with different storage systems and certification requirements. However, file size should be treated as an engineering and product planning challenge rather than an automatic justification for abandoning ownership and preservation.

A standard digital edition combined with a premium complete physical version could provide Square Enix with a practical compromise. Digital players would retain convenience, while collectors and preservation focused fans would receive a product that represents the significance of the trilogy’s conclusion.

Would you pay more for a complete multi disc edition of Final Fantasy VII Revelation, or would a game key card or download code inside the box be acceptable?
