Final Fantasy VII Revelation Launches April 8, 2027 as Square Enix Shows Its Biggest World Yet

Square Enix has officially confirmed that Final Fantasy VII Revelation will launch on April 8, 2027, bringing the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy to its conclusion almost exactly 7 years after Final Fantasy VII Remake began Cloud's reconstructed journey on April 10, 2020. The date was revealed during PlayStation State of Play alongside a new release date trailer and an extensive combat and exploration deep dive, giving players the most detailed look yet at the final chapter's enormous world, expanded combat systems, Highwind exploration, character focused quests, and new activities.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation launches simultaneously across PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam, and Epic Games Store, completing Square Enix's transition toward a broader multiplatform strategy. That represents a major departure from Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which initially launched around PlayStation exclusivity before expanding to additional platforms later. Revelation will instead give the entire current console and PC ecosystem access from day 1.

The new footage reinforces just how much larger the final game is becoming. The Highwind is no longer simply an iconic vehicle connecting locations together. Players will be able to freely fly across the planet and choose where they want to travel, pushing the regional structure introduced in Rebirth toward a far more connected open world. This builds directly on Square Enix's previously confirmed approach, which we explored when director Naoki Hamaguchi explained that players would receive the Highwind relatively early and gain much greater freedom across the world.

Ground exploration is expanding as well. Piko returns as the party's Chocobo companion but now functions as more than a mount. Piko grows stronger alongside the group, develops new abilities, assists with exploration, and can participate directly in combat. The showcase also demonstrated grappling equipment that lets characters rapidly climb buildings and navigate urban environments vertically, adding another layer to locations that previously relied heavily on conventional paths and Chocobo traversal.

The expanded freedom appears throughout side content. Players will encounter activities across the world that move well beyond straightforward monster hunts, with the showcase even demonstrating photography missions involving cats in Wutai. More importantly, certain quests allow players to select which party member takes the lead. Square Enix says those decisions can alter specific story events and gameplay scenarios, potentially giving side quests significantly greater character focus than the traditional companion relationship system used in Rebirth.

Combat receives another major evolution through the Function Integrated Tactical Suitwear system, better known as FITS. The system introduces 4 specialized combat roles called Warrior, Knight, Black Mage, and Summoner. Equipping a FITS changes a character's appearance while also modifying available moves and combat responsibilities, allowing individual party members to perform significantly different functions depending on the player's chosen setup. Cid was shown using the Knight role while Vincent demonstrated Summoner, reinforcing how Square Enix is layering a Job inspired system onto the real time and command based combat foundation established by Remake and refined by Rebirth.

That system has already become one of Revelation's defining mechanics. We previously examined how Square Enix is using FITS to expand a combat system that Hamaguchi already considered highly refined in Rebirth. Rather than replacing Materia, Synergy Abilities, character specific mechanics, or ATB commands, FITS adds another customization layer on top of them. The State of Play footage also showed clearer notifications when Synergy Abilities become available, while scenes involving Cloud, Tifa, and Barret appeared to suggest even larger coordinated attacks may be possible.

Cid and Vincent are now fully playable after accompanying the party primarily as supporting characters during Rebirth. Their inclusion expands an already large combat roster and gives Square Enix additional opportunities to create unique FITS combinations, Materia configurations, and Synergy interactions across the entire group.

Queen's Blood is also returning, but Square Enix is treating the popular card game as more than recycled side content. Revelation introduces a new Queen's Blood storyline centered around Red XIII, complete with new opponents capable of dramatically changing the flow of matches and additional gameplay challenges intended to build on the strategic mechanics established in Rebirth.

The new showcase arrives shortly after Gamescom 2026, where Square Enix revealed Ruby Weapon, Emerald Weapon, Ultima Weapon, Typhon, additional traversal mechanics, and further FITS gameplay, bringing the Planet's enormous Weapon guardians into the final conflict as Meteor, Sephiroth, Shinra, and the wider war push the world toward collapse.

The April release date also resolves another important question surrounding the project. Square Enix had previously been evaluating how to handle Revelation physically because the finale is expected to become the largest entry in the trilogy. Hamaguchi's push to secure a physical release despite potential storage and distribution challenges. Square Enix has now officially confirmed both physical and digital versions for the April 8 launch.

Preorders are now opening, with the Mecha Chocobo and Moogle Summon Materia offered as a preorder bonus. Square Enix is also preparing Premium and Premium Plus editions. The Premium Edition includes the main game, 24 hour early access, additional equipment and consumables, and a Story Expansion Pass containing 2 future story focused DLC releases. Premium Plus adds additional digital content and equipment, although Square Enix says more information about the expansions will arrive later.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is now positioned to close one of Square Enix's largest development projects during the 30th anniversary year of the original Final Fantasy VII. The trilogy began with Remake in 2020, expanded dramatically through Rebirth, and will conclude with Revelation after roughly 10 years of total production across the 3 games. Square Enix's unusually efficient trilogy development model, Creative Studio 1 has maintained much of the same team, technology, and production foundation between entries instead of rebuilding everything for each sequel.

April 8 is more than just the missing release date. The State of Play demonstration finally connects many of the systems Square Enix has been discussing individually for months into one coherent vision of what Revelation is trying to become.

Rebirth already delivered one of the strongest combinations of action combat, tactical commands, exploration, minigames, character development, and cinematic storytelling in the series. Revelation does not appear interested in replacing that foundation. Instead, Square Enix is scaling practically every part of it upward.

The Highwind turns separate regions into a world players can navigate with much greater freedom. FITS adds another strategic layer without sacrificing the identity of individual characters. Piko evolves beyond transportation, quests can change depending on who leads them, Cid and Vincent finally join the playable roster, and even Queen's Blood receives its own expanded storyline.

Most importantly, Square Enix now has a fixed finish line. Final Fantasy VII Revelation launches April 8, 2027, and after 7 years of Remake trilogy releases, the biggest remaining question is no longer when Cloud's journey ends, but exactly what Square Enix plans to reveal when everything finally reaches Sephiroth.

Does the April 8 release date and expanded gameplay showcase make Final Fantasy VII Revelation your most anticipated game of 2027, or is there another RPG you are looking forward to more?
