ASRock Launches B550M Pro A WiFi 6E as AM4 Refuses to Disappear

ASRock has quietly expanded its AMD AM4 motherboard lineup with the new B550M Pro A WiFi 6E, introducing a Micro ATX board combining Ryzen 5000 support, DDR4 memory, PCIe 4.0 storage and modern WiFi 6E connectivity. The launch is particularly interesting in 2026, several years after AMD transitioned its mainstream desktop ecosystem to AM5, showing that motherboard manufacturers still see demand for affordable AM4 systems and upgrades. According to the official ASRock specifications, the board supports Ryzen 3000, Ryzen 3000G, Ryzen 4000G, Ryzen 5000 and Ryzen 5000G desktop processors.

The B550M Pro A WiFi 6E uses an 8 phase power design and a 6 layer PCB, with 4 DDR4 DIMM slots supporting up to 128 GB of system memory. Memory speeds vary according to the installed processor, with Ryzen 5000 Vermeer CPUs officially supporting DDR4 speeds beyond 4533 through overclocking, while Cezanne and Renoir APUs can reach DDR4 4733+. XMP memory profiles are also supported.

Expansion remains relatively comprehensive for an affordable Micro ATX platform. Ryzen 3000 Matisse and Ryzen 5000 Vermeer processors provide a primary PCIe 4.0 x16 slot for graphics, while a secondary physical x16 slot operates at PCIe 3.0 x4. Another 2 PCIe 3.0 x1 slots are available for additional expansion hardware. The configuration changes slightly when using APUs, with Cezanne and Renoir limiting the primary graphics slot to PCIe 3.0 x16.

Storage includes 2 M.2 sockets and 4 SATA 6 Gb/s connections. The primary Hyper M.2 slot supports PCIe Gen4 x4 with compatible Vermeer and Matisse processors, delivering up to 64 Gb/s of theoretical bandwidth. Cezanne, Renoir and Picasso processors operate that slot at PCIe Gen3 x4, while the secondary chipset connected M.2 slot operates at PCIe Gen3 x2. This gives existing Ryzen owners access to modern PCIe 4.0 NVMe storage without requiring a transition to AM5.

Wireless connectivity is one of the most significant additions compared with a basic B550 motherboard. ASRock includes 2 x 2 WiFi 6E with access to the 6 GHz spectrum alongside Bluetooth 5.3 and MU MIMO support. Wired networking is more conservative, using Realtek RTL8111H Gigabit Ethernet rather than the 2.5 GbE increasingly common on newer AM5 boards. Audio is handled by a Realtek ALC897 7.1 channel codec.

USB connectivity includes a rear USB 3.2 Gen1 Type C connection and another Type C header for the front panel, both supporting up to 5 Gb/s. The board provides a total of 9 USB 3.2 Gen1 connections when rear ports and internal headers are combined, alongside 6 USB 2.0 connections. Builders also receive 2 RGB headers, 2 addressable RGB headers and ASRock POST Status Checker functionality for basic CPU, memory, graphics and boot troubleshooting.

ASRock released the motherboard with BIOS version 1.00 on August 27, 2026. The firmware uses AMD ComboAM4v2 AGESA 1.2.0.F and includes an updated fTPM implementation for Raven Ridge, Picasso, Matisse, Renoir, Cezanne and Vermeer processors intended to improve game compatibility. The fact that new AM4 hardware is launching alongside fresh firmware development is another indication that the platform remains commercially relevant despite being succeeded by AM5.

The board has already launched in Japan through ASRock distributor CFD on August 28, where it is being sold through Amazon with an expected retail price of approximately ¥14,980 including tax. ASRock notes that worldwide availability may vary by region, and broader international pricing has not been announced.

The timing is notable because building around DDR5 has become increasingly expensive during the current memory shortage. AMD expects elevated DDR5 pricing could remain a problem for another 2 years, helping older DDR4 platforms remain relevant for cost conscious builders. DDR4 itself is facing significant supply pressure, with prices forecast to rise further as manufacturers prioritize HBM and newer DRAM, but an existing AM4 owner can still reuse a Ryzen processor and DDR4 memory rather than replacing the entire platform.

ASRock has not stated that current memory prices motivated the B550M Pro A WiFi 6E launch. Even so, the motherboard arrives at an unusually favorable moment for extending older systems. Ryzen 5000 remains capable gaming hardware, particularly when paired with X3D processors, and adding WiFi 6E, PCIe 4.0 storage and modern connectivity gives AM4 owners another motherboard option without forcing a complete migration to DDR5.

AM4 might be old by platform standards, but it is becoming increasingly difficult to call it obsolete. The B550M Pro A WiFi 6E is not attempting to compete with premium X870 boards. Its purpose is considerably more practical. It gives builders access to Ryzen 5000, DDR4, PCIe 4.0 and WiFi 6E without paying for an entirely new CPU and memory ecosystem.

That proposition has become more relevant as PC component prices rise. For someone already holding a Ryzen 5000 processor and DDR4 memory, replacing a failed motherboard or assembling another system from existing components can make far more financial sense than moving everything to AM5.

There are compromises. Gigabit Ethernet and the ALC897 audio codec clearly reveal the budget positioning, while 128 GB memory support and PCIe connectivity are behind modern AM5 platforms. But for a gaming machine built around something like a Ryzen 7 5700X3D or 5800X3D, this is another reminder that AM4 still has plenty of practical life left.
