Metal Gear Solid Movie Reportedly Back in Development at Sony With Final Destination: Bloodlines Directors Attached

A Metal Gear Solid movie is reportedly back in active development, with The Hollywood Reporter saying Sony Pictures has tapped directing duo Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein to helm the project. The report says the adaptation is part of a new first look arrangement between Sony and the filmmakers, who recently directed Final Destination: Bloodlines and are now developing multiple projects for the studio.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will be produced by Avi Arad and Ari Arad, which gives the project a familiar big franchise production backbone. At this stage, however, major creative details are still unclear. Sony has not publicly confirmed a release date, casting, or story outline, and there is still no official word on whether the film will directly adapt the original Metal Gear Solid or take a broader approach to the franchise’s stealth espionage universe.

What is clear is that this appears to be a significant restart, or at minimum a major new phase, for a film adaptation that has spent years in development limbo. Earlier versions of a Metal Gear Solid movie had been tied to director Jordan Vogt-Roberts, and Oscar Isaac had publicly discussed playing Solid Snake in the past, but none of that ever led to a finished production. Current reporting does not indicate that Isaac is attached to this new version, and there is no sign yet that the older iteration is simply being resumed unchanged.

Lipovsky and Stein’s own comments suggest they understand exactly how loaded this assignment is. In statements quoted by trade coverage, the pair described Metal Gear Solid as a groundbreaking cinematic achievement that changed video games and said they were honored to bring Hideo Kojima’s world and characters to life. Sony, for its part, praised the duo as visually ambitious filmmakers with a strong grip on suspense, which makes them a fairly logical fit for a property built on stealth, paranoia, spectacle, and dense sci fi political intrigue.

One notable question mark is Hideo Kojima himself. At the moment, the trade report does not mention his involvement in this new version of the movie. That does not mean he is excluded, but it does mean there is currently no confirmed production role attached to his name in the reporting around the project. Given how closely Kojima is associated with Metal Gear’s identity, tone, and legacy, that detail will likely become one of the first points fans watch as the adaptation develops.

From an industry standpoint, the timing makes sense. Video game adaptations are still riding a powerful momentum wave, and Sony has become increasingly active in turning its gaming related IP into broader film and television projects. A property like Metal Gear Solid has always been one of the most obvious candidates for a prestige leaning action thriller adaptation, even if it is also one of the hardest to get right. The franchise is famous not just for action, but for its wild tonal shifts, long codec conversations, political conspiracies, surreal twists, and very specific brand of sincerity. Translating that into a theatrical film without flattening what makes it unique is going to be the real challenge.

That is why this announcement is exciting and risky at the same time. On paper, Metal Gear Solid already feels cinematic. In practice, that can make adaptation harder, not easier. Fans do not just want a military action movie with a familiar name attached. They want something that captures the strange, stylish, melodramatic, deeply self serious energy that made the games iconic in the first place.

For now, the project is real enough to take seriously, but still early enough that nearly every important question remains unanswered.

Do you think a Metal Gear Solid movie works better as a faithful adaptation of the first game, or should Sony build a new story using the series’ world and characters?
