Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition Leaks Through Discord Datamine, Expected to Be Bundled With Nitro
Microsoft may be preparing another major change to Xbox Game Pass, as a newly datamined Discord update appears to reveal a new subscription tier called Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition. The discovery comes from the Discord Datamining GitHub, where references were found suggesting that this new Game Pass tier will soon be included with Discord Nitro.
According to the datamined text, Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition will give Nitro subscribers access to more than 50 games, including Stardew Valley, Fallout 4, and Grounded. The bundle also appears to include 10 hours of cloud gaming every month, Xbox Rewards, cloud gaming for select titles from a user’s Xbox library, and up to $25 per year in store value through Rewards. The wording found in the datamine directly presents the offer as part of the Nitro subscription, stating that users can subscribe to Nitro and access Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition, gear deals, new Orbs perks, and more.
This appears to connect with the previously datamined Triton or Duet tier, which was discovered through Xbox Cloud Gaming by Redphx, the developer behind Better xCloud, a free and open source tool designed to improve Xbox Cloud Gaming and Remote Play experiences. Redphx also separately spotted the Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition name through X, which suggests that this tier may not be limited only to Discord Nitro and could eventually be sold as a standalone Xbox Game Pass option.
Pricing remains unclear for now. Discord Nitro currently costs $9.99 per month, so some speculation points to Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition potentially landing around $4.99 or $5.99 if sold separately. However, there has not been any confirmed pricing leak yet, so this should be treated only as a market estimate rather than confirmed information.
The leaked Discord text mentions Stardew Valley, Fallout 4, and Grounded, but the full game library may be broader. According to Windows Central, Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition may include several Microsoft owned and first party titles such as Doom Eternal, Doom 64, Dishonored 2, Fable Anniversary, Fallout 76, Gears 5, Halo 5 Guardians, Halo Wars 2, Hellblade, Ori and the Blind Forest, Psychonauts, State of Decay 2, The Elder Scrolls Online, and more.
If accurate, Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition would represent a lower cost entry point into the Xbox ecosystem. Instead of offering the full Game Pass library, day one releases, or unlimited cloud gaming, the Starter Edition appears focused on a smaller catalog, limited cloud access, Xbox Rewards integration, and bundled partner value through Discord Nitro. This could make it attractive to casual players, PC users, mobile focused users, and Discord subscribers who may not currently pay for Game Pass.
The timing also makes sense when looking at Microsoft’s broader subscription strategy. Game Pass has continued to evolve as Microsoft searches for a more flexible structure that can serve different types of players. Not every user wants Game Pass Ultimate, and not every player needs day one access to every major release. A Starter Edition could help Microsoft capture users who are interested in Xbox content but not ready to commit to a higher monthly price.
This leak also arrives alongside larger rumors of a Game Pass revamp. Asha Sharma, who is now reportedly leading Xbox following Phil Spencer, has already been associated with major changes to Game Pass Ultimate, including a price cut and the removal of new Call of Duty games from that tier. If Microsoft is truly moving toward a more modular subscription strategy, Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition may only be the first step toward a broader menu of Game Pass options.
The potential Discord Nitro bundle is also strategically important. Discord remains one of the most important communication platforms for gaming communities, especially across PC and cross platform multiplayer. By placing Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition inside Nitro, Microsoft could reach a younger and more socially active gaming audience while giving Discord additional subscription value. For Microsoft, it is a smart user acquisition channel. For Discord, it adds a recognizable gaming benefit to Nitro.
The limited cloud gaming detail is also worth watching. The datamined text mentions 10 hours of cloud gaming every month, along with cloud gaming support for select games from a user’s Xbox library. This suggests Microsoft may be experimenting with a more controlled and lower cost version of Xbox Cloud Gaming. Instead of unlimited access, Starter Edition could function as a taste of cloud gaming, giving players enough time to test the feature without placing the same infrastructure demand as Game Pass Ultimate.
For Xbox, this could become a practical way to expand the funnel. A player who enters through Discord Nitro and tries Starter Edition may later upgrade to a higher Game Pass tier. A player who mainly wants access to a small catalog may stay on the cheaper tier. A player who uses cloud gaming occasionally may find the 10 hour limit enough. This kind of segmentation is common in subscription businesses, and Xbox may now be moving more aggressively in that direction.
Still, the biggest question will be how Microsoft communicates the value of each tier. Game Pass has already gone through several naming changes and structural adjustments, and adding another tier could create confusion if the benefits are not clearly explained. Players will want to know whether Starter Edition includes console downloads, PC access, cloud only access, EA Play, online multiplayer benefits, discounts, Rewards, and whether the library will rotate like other Game Pass tiers.
For now, Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition remains unofficial, but the Discord datamine gives the rumor more weight. If the leak is accurate, Microsoft may soon offer a more affordable and more flexible entry point into Game Pass, with Discord Nitro serving as a major launch partner.
This could be a smart move for Xbox, especially as subscription fatigue continues to grow. A smaller, cheaper Game Pass tier may not appeal to hardcore players who want the full Ultimate package, but it could be exactly what Microsoft needs to attract casual users, cloud curious players, and Discord communities looking for extra gaming value.
Will Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition make Game Pass more accessible, or will another subscription tier make the service harder for players to understand?
