Xbox CEO Praises The Elder Scrolls VI as Bethesda Workers Protest Layoffs

The Elder Scrolls VI is now playable internally at Bethesda Game Studios, with Xbox CEO Asha Sharma describing the scale and story of the long awaited RPG as impressive after seeing a live playthrough during a visit to the developer's Rockville, Maryland headquarters. The visit, however, unfolded against a much more difficult backdrop as unionized Bethesda workers staged a protest outside the studio over Microsoft's ongoing Xbox layoffs.

"Live playthrough of The Elder Scrolls VI this morning. The scale and grandeur are incredible. The story is even greater." Quote by: Asha Sharma. Sharma shared the comments on August 11 after seeing the game running directly at Bethesda. Her post also included 8 asterisks after The Elder Scrolls VI, immediately generating speculation that she could be teasing the still unannounced subtitle. There is currently no confirmation that the number of characters has any connection to the final title.

The demonstration outside Bethesda was deliberately timed around the Xbox CEO's visit. Communications Workers of America members placed a giant inflatable rat known as Scabby outside the building alongside a wall of red flags representing workers affected by the Xbox restructuring. The protest continued opposition from Bethesda and ZeniMax employees following Microsoft's decision to begin eliminating approximately 3,200 Xbox positions during fiscal year 2027, including an initial wave of roughly 1,600 jobs announced in July.

The Communications Workers of America previously said the reductions affected hundreds of union represented workers across Bethesda Game Studios, id Software, and ZeniMax Online Studios. The union argues that losing experienced developers, artists, designers, programmers, and quality assurance personnel could ultimately reduce development capacity, increase release timelines, and affect the quality of Xbox's largest franchises.

The latest protest follows a larger July demonstration outside the same Bethesda headquarters, where hundreds of employees and supporters called for Microsoft to return to bargaining and provide stronger protections around severance, internal placement, and future workforce reductions. Bethesda developers argued that eliminating experienced staff creates challenges that cannot simply be solved by hiring replacements because knowledge of the studio's tools, technology, and development processes takes significant time to rebuild.

The situation creates a sharp contrast with Microsoft's renewed emphasis on The Elder Scrolls as one of Xbox's most important franchises. Bethesda Game Studios recently confirmed that The Elder Scrolls VI is now its primary development focus, with the majority of the studio working on the project. Bethesda says the game is progressing according to plan and is already being played internally every day.

"The Elder Scrolls VI is our primary development focus today, with the majority of our team currently working on the next chapter of the franchise."

The Elder Scrolls VI is being developed using Creation Engine 3, the new shared technology platform Bethesda created following Starfield. The engine introduces updated rendering, tools, and systems designed to allow Bethesda to support several major role playing projects simultaneously. Fallout 5 is currently in preproduction, while The Elder Scrolls VI remains the studio's largest active production.

The project was originally announced in 2018, meaning players have now waited more than 8 years without a gameplay reveal or release window. Bethesda has not confirmed the setting, platforms, subtitle, combat systems, world structure, or launch year. Sharma seeing a live playthrough nevertheless provides another indication that development has progressed considerably beyond the conceptual stage that defined the project during its earliest years.

The layoffs remain difficult to separate from that progress, Bethesda Game Studios being affected by the Xbox restructuring highlighted the contradiction between Microsoft identifying established franchises as strategic priorities while simultaneously reducing the teams responsible for creating them. ZeniMax Online Studios has also warned that The Elder Scrolls Online content will move more slowly following its own workforce reductions.A playable internal build of The Elder Scrolls VI is encouraging after years of almost complete silence, and having the Xbox CEO openly praise its scale and narrative suggests Bethesda is reaching a stage where the project is increasingly tangible. With the majority of Bethesda Game Studios now focused on the RPG and Creation Engine 3 providing its technical foundation, the next major question is when players will finally see it.

The circumstances surrounding Sharma's visit are equally important. Microsoft is asking Bethesda to deliver one of the most anticipated RPGs in gaming while employees are publicly protesting workforce reductions that directly affected experienced development staff. A strong franchise name and advanced technology cannot completely compensate for lost institutional knowledge.

The Elder Scrolls VI may ultimately become one of Xbox's defining releases, but its success will depend on more than executive confidence. Bethesda needs sufficient time, talent, resources, and organizational stability to turn an ambitious internal build into the game players have been waiting for since 2018.

Does hearing that The Elder Scrolls VI is already being played internally increase your confidence in the project, or are the continuing Bethesda and Xbox layoffs a bigger concern?
