Blizzard Entertainment is taking an important step toward bringing World of Warcraft beyond traditional PC gaming, with World of Warcraft: Forever introducing native controller support that could eventually pave the way for a console release. Speaking in a recent GamesRadar interview, executive producer and vice president Holly Longdale explained that improving gamepad compatibility is part of a broader ambition to make the legendary MMORPG accessible across more devices, including potential future gaming platforms.
"Play it wherever you want and, at some point, on whatever you want."

Longdale specifically referenced Microsoft's upcoming Project Helix, suggesting that the boundaries between PC and console gaming could become less restrictive as hardware platforms evolve. Microsoft's next generation Xbox is being developed to support both Xbox console and PC games, potentially creating new opportunities for traditionally PC exclusive titles. However, Blizzard has not officially announced World of Warcraft for Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo platforms, and Longdale's comments should not be interpreted as confirmation of a console port.
Although modern World of Warcraft has supported basic controller input since the Shadowlands expansion, Forever introduces a substantially more comprehensive implementation. The new system features a dedicated controller interface, customized action bars, improved targeting controls, and menu navigation designed for gamepads without requiring external modifications such as ConsolePort. Blizzard's official player guide confirms that controller support will be available in beta when the game launches on November 4, 2026, for Windows and Mac.
The improved controls could prove particularly valuable for handheld gaming PCs such as the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X, where traditional keyboard and mouse interfaces can be difficult to navigate. Longdale also acknowledged the creativity of players who have already experimented with running World of Warcraft on unconventional hardware, reinforcing Blizzard's interest in making Azeroth accessible through different gaming experiences.
The development arrives as World of Warcraft: Forever prepares to launch with more than 1,000 new quests and a permanent level 60 experience. Blizzard's new version of Azeroth introduces 9 dungeons, 2 raids, the playable Skyborne race, additional regions, and modernized systems while preserving the exploration and social interaction of the original MMORPG. Controller support represents another part of that modernization, potentially lowering the entry barrier for players who prefer consoles and handheld devices.
Bringing World of Warcraft to consoles has been discussed for years, but Forever's dedicated controller interface represents meaningful technical progress toward making that possibility practical. The biggest obstacle has never been simply running the game on console hardware, but adapting its extensive ability bars, targeting mechanics, inventory management, and interface for controllers. With Project Helix moving toward a more unified PC and Xbox ecosystem, Blizzard could eventually reach an entirely new audience without fundamentally redesigning World of Warcraft. However, whether this development results in an official console release will ultimately depend on Blizzard's long term platform strategy.
Would you play World of Warcraft on Xbox or Project Helix with a controller, or is the MMORPG better experienced with a traditional keyboard and mouse?
