Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember Expands Combat Freedom Following Player Feedback, Taking Inspiration From Phantom Blade Zero
Team NINJA is introducing significant combat improvements to Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember, moving away from the heavy reliance on Deflection that defined the original Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. Following feedback from its September 2026 Alpha Demo, the developer has confirmed adjustments to Insight Skills, Spirit management, Martial Arts and Wizardry Spells, giving players greater freedom to approach combat aggressively rather than depending primarily on defensive counters.
According to Team NINJA's official Alpha Demo Feedback Report, the September 16 to 30 testing period provided valuable information about the sequel's combat mechanics, performance and exploration systems. Players experienced the open battlefield of Changban, fighting alongside Liu Bei's army against Cao Cao's forces while testing the new movement and combat abilities.
The biggest changes focus on making Insight Skills more responsive and rewarding. Team NINJA plans to expand timing windows for successful Deflections and Insight Skills, increase Spirit recovery after successful actions and improve aerial attack tracking. Strong Attacks and Martial Arts will also deal greater damage to enemy Spirit gauges, while additional Wizardry Spells will become usable during aerial combat. These adjustments are intended to encourage continuous offensive pressure rather than forcing players to wait for opportunities to counterattack.
Wo Long 2 Alpha Demo Feedback
| Category | Positive | Negative |
|---|---|---|
| Overall Experience | 71.9% | 11.1% |
| Insight Skills | 65.7% | 14.7% |
| Changban Open Field | 73.9% | 5.2% |
| Graphics | 49.7% | 19.8% |
| PC Optimization | 24.8% | 50.5% |
Results come from Team NINJA's official player survey. Neutral responses are excluded from the table.
The feedback also highlights technical concerns, particularly on PC, where more than half of respondents rated optimization negatively. Team NINJA has committed to improving frame rate stability, reducing loading times, addressing model pop in and refining graphics quality. Additional adjustments will target camera movement during aerial combat, enemy attack visibility, customizable controls and cooperative multiplayer stability.
These changes reinforce the sequel's broader transition toward open battlefields, vertical movement and expanded combat options. Unlike the more structured encounters of Fallen Dynasty, Wings of Ember introduces larger environments where players can approach enemy strongholds, engage in aerial combat and influence battlefield conditions.
The direction also draws comparisons with Phantom Blade Zero's emphasis on weapon variety and expressive martial arts combat. S GAME's action RPG offers more than 30 primary weapons and 25 secondary weapons, giving players multiple offensive strategies without making parrying the only viable approach. Although Team NINJA has not confirmed that Phantom Blade Zero directly influenced its design, both games reflect a growing emphasis on combat flexibility within martial arts action RPGs.
Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember launches on March 4, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC through Steam and Xbox on PC. The game will also be available through Xbox Game Pass at launch, with Standard and Digital Deluxe editions currently available for preorder.
Team NINJA's willingness to reconsider Deflection's dominance could be one of the most important improvements in Wo Long 2. The original game's combat was responsive and rewarding, but its reliance on perfectly timed counters sometimes reduced the importance of alternative abilities and offensive experimentation.
Expanding Spirit recovery, improving aerial combat and strengthening Martial Arts could create a more dynamic system where players develop their own fighting styles rather than following a single optimal strategy. However, the Alpha Demo's optimization results are equally important. With 50.5% of PC respondents expressing dissatisfaction, performance improvements must remain a priority before launch.
If Team NINJA successfully balances combat freedom with technical stability, Wings of Ember could become a substantial evolution of the original while competing with other ambitious martial arts action RPGs.
Do you prefer the precise Deflection combat of the original Wo Long, or would you rather have more freedom to combine aggressive attacks, aerial movement and special abilities like Phantom Blade Zero?
