Phantom Blade Zero Brings Donnie Yen Into Its Combat as State of Play Arrives August 17

S GAME has opened pre orders for Phantom Blade Zero while revealing that martial arts icon Donnie Yen has played a significant role in the game's development. According to the PlayStation Blog, Yen has served as a creative consultant since 2023, contributing his martial arts and action filmmaking experience to the combat system. He is also providing facial and motion capture for Mó Yuan, the father of protagonist Soul.

The announcement arrived alongside a new preorder trailer featuring additional story scenes, characters, and combat sequences. S GAME also confirmed a dedicated Phantom Blade Zero State of Play for August 17 at 7 PM PT and 10 PM ET, or August 18 at 10 AM in Taipei and Beijing. The presentation will include nearly 20 minutes of new gameplay, previously unseen characters, and a closer look at how different character builds can influence combat.

Pre orders are available through the PlayStation Store and PC storefronts, with 2 digital editions available:

S GAME confirmed that the Legacy appearance and Treasure Basin accessory can also be unlocked normally through gameplay, meaning the preorder bonuses are not permanently exclusive.

The latest update follows confirmation that Phantom Blade Zero development is complete ahead of its October 29, 2026 release on PlayStation 5 and PC. The action RPG follows Soul after he is framed for murdering his master and left with only 66 days to live, with combat built around Chinese martial arts, fast weapon exchanges, counters, deflections, and S GAME's Kungfupunk interpretation of wuxia.

Donnie Yen's involvement gives Phantom Blade Zero additional credibility around one of its biggest selling points: martial arts combat. With nearly 20 minutes of new gameplay scheduled for August 17, the upcoming State of Play should provide a much clearer look at whether the final combat system can match the choreography shown throughout the game's trailers.

Does Donnie Yen's involvement make you more interested in Phantom Blade Zero, or are you waiting for the August 17 gameplay showcase before deciding?
