Wo Long 2 Goes Open World as Team NINJA Reduces Deflection Reliance and Expands Combat
Team NINJA is making substantial changes to Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember, transforming the sequel into an open world action RPG with a dynamic battlefield, expanded vertical movement, aerial combat, and a redesigned combat philosophy intended to reduce the heavy reliance on Deflection that defined Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. Producer Masakazu Hirayama revealed the new direction during a ChinaJoy 2026 interview, providing the clearest explanation yet of how Team NINJA plans to evolve the series.
The sequel abandons the largely linear mission structure of Fallen Dynasty in favor of a large connected battlefield. Rather than treating the open world as a collection of isolated activities, Team NINJA wants events occurring in one area to influence the wider conflict and create changes elsewhere across the map. Hirayama acknowledged the risk of repetitive exploration that can affect open world games and explained that the changing battlefield is intended to give exploration a stronger sense of purpose.
This transition also requires Team NINJA to redesign the Morale system. In Fallen Dynasty, players raised Morale by defeating enemies and activating flags throughout individual battlefields before confronting major bosses. Wo Long 2 retains Morale, but its implementation is being reworked around the open world structure. Hirayama stopped short of detailing the complete system, confirming only that it will function differently from the original game.
Combat is receiving equally significant changes. Fallen Dynasty was built around Deflection, allowing skilled players to counter almost every enemy attack through precise timing. Team NINJA confirmed that it received feedback that this could make encounters feel repetitive because Deflection often remained the most effective response regardless of what an enemy attempted. Wo Long 2 will therefore introduce new Phoenix abilities and a broader selection of proactive combat options designed to prevent players from relying exclusively on Deflection. Importantly, Deflection itself is not being removed. Instead, Team NINJA is expanding the combat system around it.
"We did receive that feedback. If we simply increased the difficulty, players might still respond by relying on Deflection. This time we have added the power of the Phoenix to provide players with more choices and more proactive moves beyond Deflection."

Wo Long 2 is also becoming considerably more vertical. Hirayama previously served as director on Ninja Gaiden 4, and development of the 2 games overlapped. Some of that experience is now influencing Wings of Ember, particularly through wall running, climbing, aerial movement, camera design, and more three dimensional environments. Players will also be able to perform defensive and offensive actions while airborne, while certain enemies can fight from the air and require appropriate martial arts or tactical responses.
Team NINJA does not intend to create weapons that function primarily in aerial combat because that could make them less effective during ground encounters. Instead, players will be given greater freedom to build characters capable of handling both situations. Vertical exploration will also be less punishing than some action RPGs, with Hirayama explaining that falling should generally cost some health before returning the player to a safe position rather than creating situations where a minor traversal mistake results in an unavoidable death.
The battlefield systems extend beyond the player. Companion officers can be assigned to bases, and those assignments can influence conditions across the battlefield. Divine Beasts also return, with players once again building relationships with historical officers to acquire their power. A new manifestation system will connect these creatures with the Phoenix mechanics, producing different effects depending on the Divine Beast being used.
Boss encounters are also being refined. Multiple boss battles will return, but Team NINJA says enemy AI has been improved and attacks originating outside the player's visible screen are being adjusted to reduce situations that feel unfair. This directly addresses one of the frustrations that could emerge during encounters where several aggressive enemies attacked simultaneously.
The sequel moves deeper into the Three Kingdoms timeline with major conflicts including the Battle of Changban and the Battle of Red Cliffs. The story follows a young warrior whose home was destroyed by Cao Cao's forces, sending him onto the battlefield seeking revenge alongside legendary strategist Pang Tong. Team NINJA says the game will continue blending historical events with its own interpretation rather than strictly reproducing history, with Wei, Shu, and Wu all receiving substantial attention.
These details significantly expand what Team NINJA originally revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase. As covered in our original Wo Long 2 announcement, Wings of Ember follows Fallen Dynasty after the original surpassed 5 million players worldwide and also marks the arrival of Team NINJA's Masocore action RPG formula on Nintendo Switch 2.
Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember launches worldwide in early 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC through Steam and Xbox. It will also be available through Xbox Game Pass from launch.
Moving Wo Long into an open world is already a major structural change, but reducing the dependence on Deflection may have an even larger effect on how the sequel feels. Fallen Dynasty's counter focused combat gave the game a strong identity, yet once players mastered its timing, many encounters could revolve around waiting for the next attack and responding with the same fundamental mechanic.
Team NINJA appears to understand that simply making Deflection harder would not solve the underlying issue. Adding proactive Phoenix abilities, aerial combat, wall movement, more vertical environments, and battlefield systems that react to player actions gives Wings of Ember an opportunity to preserve the aggressive rhythm of Wo Long while providing considerably more tactical freedom.
The strongest sign is that Team NINJA is applying lessons from several of its recent games rather than treating Wo Long 2 as a straightforward sequel. If the studio can combine Fallen Dynasty's fast martial arts combat with the mobility of Ninja Gaiden and an open world that genuinely reacts to an evolving war, Wings of Ember could become a much more ambitious interpretation of the Three Kingdoms formula.
Do you think Wo Long 2 moving toward an open world and reducing its reliance on Deflection will improve the combat, or was the parry focused design what made the original special?
