Warlock Announced as a Single Player Open World Action Adventure Set in the World of D&d, Launching in 2027
Ahead of The Game Awards 2025, Wizards of the Coast and developer Invoke Studios revealed Warlock, a third person single player open world action adventure game set within the expansive universe of Dungeons and Dragons. Previously announced in development in 2022, the Unreal Engine 5 powered title is now targeting a 2027 launch and represents a significant creative leap for Invoke Studios, formerly known as Tuque Games, the team behind Dungeons and Dragons Dark Alliance.
Invoke Studios currently employs between one hundred eighty and two hundred developers in Montréal. The team includes veterans with experience in action adventure and immersive simulation design, leading the studio to pursue a direction that blends fast paced combat, spell based traversal, and systemic exploration. Unlike traditional Dungeons and Dragons adaptations, Warlock focuses entirely on a single predefined protagonist rather than a customizable party or class selection.
Players take on the role of Kaatri, a skilled former weapon master who has entered into a dangerous Pact to become a Warlock. Her past experience grants her proficiency with a variety of melee weapons, while her Pact unlocks a diverse spell arsenal. Invoke emphasized that one of the core design pillars is the seamless fusion of melee combat with magic, creating a dynamic and fluid hybrid combat experience. Kaatri is portrayed by acclaimed actress Tricia Helfer, known for her roles in Battlestar Galactica and Lucifer.
Magic will extend far beyond combat. Many spells will be used for traversal or environmental interaction, with developers hinting at lateral uses that reward creativity and player agency. The world itself is described as open and exploration driven, allowing players to experiment with abilities in various contexts.
Warlock is not attempting to replicate tabletop Dungeons and Dragons mechanics. There are no dice rolls or rule based character sheets, which ensures newcomers can engage with the game immediately without needing familiarity with the tabletop systems. However, the rich lore and world building of Dungeons and Dragons remain foundational to the narrative. Invoke confirmed that players will encounter familiar characters and references throughout the journey.
When asked about multiplayer support, Invoke VP Creative Jeff Hattem explained that the team intentionally chose to make Warlock a single player experience to prioritize narrative focus, emotional momentum, and high stakes storytelling. The game will not include dialogue choices or branching narratives, instead committing to a tightly crafted storyline led by a defined protagonist.
Gameplay footage will debut next Summer, offering the first in depth look at spell combat, traversal mechanics, and open world design direction. With its blend of action adventure, Dungeons and Dragons lore, and a uniquely empowered central character, Warlock is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious fantasy titles of 2027.
