Thief: Legacy of Shadow Announced for VR, Launching December 4 on PlayStation VR2, Quest, and SteamVR

UK-based studio Maze Theory, known for its Doctor Who VR titles and Peaky Blinders: The King’s Ransom, has officially announced Thief: Legacy of Shadow, a new stealth-action experience set to release on December 4, 2025. Published by Vertigo Games, the title will be available exclusively for virtual reality platforms, including PlayStation VR2, Meta Quest 2 and 3, and SteamVR-compatible headsets.

Legacy of Shadow brings players back to The City, the dark, oppressive setting familiar to fans of the franchise, returning eleven years after Eidos Montréal’s 2014 reboot. The world remains a maze of twisting streets, towering rooftops, and lurking shadows. The City is now under the iron rule of Baron Ulysses Northcrest, a ruthless leader who enforces absolute control through his City Watch, crushing any spark of resistance.

Unlike previous entries, players will not reprise the role of master thief Garrett. Instead, they will play as Magpie, a new protagonist shaped by hardship and survival. Orphaned by Northcrest’s tyranny, Magpie has honed her skills in the art of theft to survive the city’s chaos. Her life takes a dramatic turn when she uncovers a mysterious ancient artifact tied to a dark legacy, setting her on a path to uncover the city’s deepest secrets and the conspiracy haunting its very foundation.

Thief: Legacy of Shadow is designed from the ground up for VR, implementing immersive, tactile mechanics that make stealth and theft feel more physical and interactive. Players will pickpocket guards, open hidden compartments, and unlock doors using detailed motion-based controls. The developers have also emphasized VR archery and stealth combat, offering a variety of arrows and gadgets to distract, disable, or neutralize enemies. Every mission promises multiple approaches and playstyles, allowing players to decide whether to ghost through undetected or silently eliminate threats from the darkness.

Although the VR exclusivity limits its reach, Thief: Legacy of Shadow aims to deliver one of the most authentic stealth experiences ever crafted for virtual reality fans. With Maze Theory’s expertise in immersive storytelling and VR design, the game could mark a significant return for one of gaming’s most beloved stealth franchises.

Are you ready to step back into the shadows of The City, or do you think Thief: Legacy of Shadow deserved a non-VR release as well?
