The Witcher 4 Will Build on the Legacy of Its Predecessor Without Trying to Outdo It, Says Narrative Director
As CD Projekt Red continues work on The Witcher 4, the studio has made it clear that its goal is not to "top" The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, but to honor its legacy while evolving the series with fresh ideas and new technology.
In a recent interview with GamesRadar+, Narrative Director Philipp Weber addressed the ongoing debate about whether The Witcher 4 can surpass its critically acclaimed predecessor. He admitted the topic is something he thinks about, but stressed that video games are not mathematical equations, and their reception is ultimately subjective.
Weber stated, "You can't mathematically beat The Witcher 3." Instead, the development philosophy behind The Witcher 4 centers on respecting what came before while also taking bold steps into new territory. "It’s a healthy mix of really moving forward and also trying out some new things, but doing justice to what was there, not trying to beat it," Weber explained.
This approach reflects CDPR’s broader vision of creating a true sequel that doesn’t just revisit familiar mechanics and narratives but instead pushes the series forward. At the same time, the studio is committed to maintaining the elements that made The Witcher 3 beloved by millions of players around the world.
Despite not trying to "outdo" the previous title, The Witcher 4 is expected to showcase technical improvements thanks to a new console-first approach and the generational leap in hardware. A recent internal tech demo, reportedly set in the village of Valdrest, highlighted increased NPC density and advanced worldbuilding capabilities. These improvements suggest the next entry will likely surpass its predecessor in visual fidelity and immersion, delivering a next-gen RPG experience built on the solid foundation laid by The Witcher 3.
CD Projekt Red has not yet revealed an official release date for The Witcher 4, but with growing transparency around the studio’s development process and goals, fans can expect more updates in the near future.
