The Witcher 3 Songs of the Past Gets August 25 Reveal as Switch 2 Questions Grow

CD Projekt Red has confirmed that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Songs of the Past will appear during Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25, giving players their first proper look at the new expansion ahead of its planned 2027 release. The presentation begins at 11:00 a.m. PT, 2:00 p.m. ET and 8:00 p.m. CEST, with Geoff Keighley hosting the global broadcast from Cologne, Germany.

Songs of the Past was officially announced on May 27 as the third major expansion for The Witcher 3. CD Projekt Red is developing the project in collaboration with Fool’s Theory, a Polish studio formed by industry veterans who previously worked on The Witcher franchise. The expansion returns players to the role of Geralt of Rivia and is currently confirmed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

The expansion will arrive approximately 12 years after the original release of The Witcher 3. CD Projekt Red later explained that the 2027 launch was selected to give the development team enough time to reach its intended quality target, with the project reportedly positioned closer to Blood and Wine than a smaller content update.

The announcement has generated excitement among players preparing to return to the Continent, particularly as Songs of the Past could become Geralt’s final major playable adventure before Ciri takes the leading role in The Witcher 4. However, the confirmed platform list has also created frustration among Nintendo Switch 2 owners because CD Projekt Red has not announced a version for Nintendo’s current system.

The concern is understandable following CD Projekt Red’s work on Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition for Nintendo Switch 2. The complete game and Phantom Liberty expansion launched with the console in June 2025, alongside motion controls, mouse support, touch screen functionality and a physical 64 GB game card. Its existence demonstrates that CD Projekt Red is prepared to invest in technically demanding Nintendo adaptations when the commercial and development conditions are suitable.

The current absence of Switch 2 from the Songs of the Past platform list does not necessarily mean a version will never arrive. CD Projekt Red could announce an additional port later, potentially after the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC versions are further into production. However, the company has made no commitment, and Switch 2 players should treat the expansion as unavailable for the platform until an official announcement confirms otherwise.

Gamescom Opening Night Live is an appropriate stage for Songs of the Past because CD Projekt Red needs to demonstrate that this is a substantial return to The Witcher 3 rather than a smaller nostalgia driven update. After Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine established an exceptional standard for expansions, players will expect a meaningful region, memorable characters and a story capable of serving as Geralt’s final major chapter.

The Switch 2 discussion is equally important. Cyberpunk 2077 proved that CD Projekt Red can bring one of its most technically demanding games to Nintendo hardware, making the omission difficult for fans to ignore. A Switch 2 release may require additional optimisation and development resources, but the platform appears capable enough to make the request reasonable.

Should CD Projekt Red bring Songs of the Past to Nintendo Switch 2, or should the studio focus entirely on delivering the strongest possible experience for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S?
