The Witcher 3 Remastered Mod Delivers Up to 30% Faster Path Tracing
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered officially launched on September 29, 2026, bringing path tracing and a substantial graphics overhaul to the PC version. Remarkably, modder HourLines released the first version of a dedicated path tracing and ray tracing optimization mod on Nexus Mods later that same day, targeting some of the largest performance costs introduced by the new renderer.
The Path Tracing and Ray Tracing Optimization mod primarily reduces the default path tracing light bounce count from 2 to 1. According to the developer, this produces roughly 10% higher performance outdoors and up to 30% indoors, where the path tracing workload is typically heavier. The mod compensates for the removed bounce by slightly increasing bounced light brightness, although the darkest indoor corners can appear around 10% darker. Lit areas and outdoor scenes are described as largely unchanged.
Development moved quickly after the September 29 release. By October 1, the mod had reached Version 4, adding compatibility with The Witcher 3 Remastered Hotfix 5.00c alongside additional graphics controls. Players can select between 1 and 4 path tracing light bounces, increase HairWorks lighting to as many as 6 bounces, disable ray traced shadows while path tracing is active for roughly another 10% performance improvement, or disable ray traced caustics when using conventional ray tracing for approximately 5%. The developer has also worked on smoother frame times while moving through the game world and reducing CPU processing for the ray tracing scene in crowded areas.
Compatibility is broad for this type of graphics modification. HourLines states that the mod works with NVIDIA and AMD GPUs across the Steam and GOG versions while remaining compatible with DLSS, FSR, XeSS and frame generation. Version 4 specifically adds compatibility with Hotfix 5.00c, giving players access to the additional optimization controls while running the latest game update.
The optimization arrives shortly after The Witcher 3 Remastered introduced full path tracing and DLSS 4.5, transforming the PC version into a considerably more demanding showcase for modern graphics hardware. Technologies such as upscaling, ray reconstruction and frame generation now play an increasingly important role in maintaining high frame rates when enabling the game's most advanced rendering settings.
The interesting part of this mod is not simply the potential 30% improvement, but the additional control it gives PC players over the rendering workload. Reducing indirect light propagation does technically lower path tracing accuracy, but the visual difference may be a reasonable compromise for systems struggling in demanding indoor environments. Players with faster GPUs can also move in the opposite direction and increase the number of light bounces, turning the mod into a broader graphics tuning tool rather than only a performance fix.
Would you reduce the path tracing bounce count for up to 30% more performance, or would you rather keep the highest lighting accuracy even at a lower frame rate?
