Team Cherry Confirms Hollow Knight Silksong DLC Is in Development and Reveals Plans for New Non Hollow Knight Projects
Team Cherry is approaching the three month milestone since the launch of Hollow Knight Silksong, a title that was one of the most anticipated releases in modern gaming and one of the strongest games of 2025. The game has already sold millions of copies and secured five nominations at The Game Awards, including the prestigious Game of the Year category. With seven years of development behind them and a global success that few studios ever experience, many assumed Team Cherry would take a well deserved break. Instead, the studio is already moving forward with new content for Silksong and has also begun exploring concepts for entirely new projects outside the Hollow Knight universe.
These details originate from a new in depth interview published by Bloomberg. The interview contains major spoilers for Hollow Knight Silksong, so readers who have not yet completed the game should approach the original article with caution. The non spoiler sections address the studio’s immediate development priorities and the future direction of the Team Cherry portfolio.
When asked about the highly anticipated character Steel Assassin Sharpe, co creator Ari Gibson explained that Sharpe was originally planned for the main game but was ultimately set aside because Silksong had already become an enormous production with many moving pieces that required extensive polish.
Gibson elaborated by saying that Sharpe and a suite of their companions were placed on hold because every component of the game needed perfection, and achieving that polish demanded significant time. He added that the team is eager to reintroduce Sharpe once development capacity allows.
Journalist Jason Schreier then asked whether the Village of Lions was also part of the planned content that had been tucked away. Gibson confirmed that Team Cherry intends to deliver every piece of content originally promised. He noted that these additions are not only obligations but genuinely exciting creative opportunities for the team. He also revealed that beyond existing commitments, Team Cherry has conceptualized new content ideas that could also be added to the world. The challenge now is determining the appropriate development timeline to bring everything together.
Regarding release timing for these DLC expansions, the team openly acknowledged that schedules remain uncertain. Gibson remarked that Team Cherry did not set out to spend seven years on Silksong, and that while they do not anticipate another timeline of that magnitude, their development philosophy prioritizes quality over speed. This approach can extend schedules, although the team aims to be more efficient without compromising artistic standards.
Looking beyond Silksong, both Gibson and fellow co creator William Pellen confirmed that Team Cherry has multiple ideas for future games. They also expressed a candid reflection on the reality of long creative cycles. Pellen explained that they have been thinking about the ideas they want to pursue and the types of experiences they hope to craft. Gibson added that they already have concepts for other games they want to make. The only concern, as they humorously admitted, is time itself. Seven year development cycles limit how many projects a team can create in a lifetime. Gibson noted that while the timeline is finite, they still believe they can deliver a number of additional games so long as no unexpected tragedy occurs.
Gibson also stated that Team Cherry has planned to move beyond the Hollow Knight universe, although their future titles will still focus on expansive worlds, unusual characters and large scale boss encounters. These thematic pillars will remain consistent even as the genres and settings evolve. This does not mean they will abandon the Hollow Knight world entirely. Gibson confirmed that the team has ideas for how they could eventually return to the franchise, but they do not want to be defined solely as creators of Hollow Knight.
Despite this desire to expand creatively, Gibson clarified that the team is not fatigued by the Hollow Knight series. In fact, he stated that if they were asked to create another Hollow Knight game immediately, it would be a joy. Their motivation to explore new genres is rooted in creative curiosity rather than exhaustion, and they are excited to see how shifting themes or mechanics could influence the stories they want to tell.
Team Cherry’s commitment to quality, their thoughtful approach to world building and their openness to exploring new creative directions continue to position them as one of the most respected studios in the modern independent scene. Fans can look forward to additional Silksong content, while also anticipating the next evolution of the Team Cherry vision.
