Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition Games Seemingly Leak, With Launch Reportedly Planned for May 2026
Xbox appears to be preparing another major Game Pass shakeup, and the next move may be the launch of a cheaper subscription tier called Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition. After recent reports claimed that Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass are getting cheaper, new leaks suggest that Microsoft is preparing a lower cost entry point with a library of more than 50 games, limited cloud gaming, Discord Nitro integration, and a possible launch window no later than mid May 2026.
The latest report comes from Billbil kun at Dealabs, a source with a strong track record for subscription service leaks, especially PlayStation Plus lineups. As always, the information should still be treated as unofficial until Microsoft confirms it, but Billbil kun’s history makes this one worth watching closely.
The rumored Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition appears to be similar to the current Game Pass Essential tier, though with several important differences. Earlier leaks suggested that Starter would include a library of 50 plus games, a monthly limit on Xbox Cloud Gaming usage, Discord Nitro as part of the subscription package, and Xbox Rewards related benefits. However, the most important reported limitation is that Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition will not include online multiplayer access.
That detail could define the entire tier. For console players, online multiplayer is still one of the most essential Xbox subscription features. If Starter does not include multiplayer access, then users subscribed only to this tier would not be able to play the online modes of purchased games like the newest Call of Duty, EA Sports FC, or other premium multiplayer titles. That makes Starter feel less like a full replacement for Essential and more like a lower cost discovery tier focused on casual access, single player games, cloud trials, and bundled partner value.
The leaked list of games is very close to what players currently see through Game Pass Essential, although there are some differences. According to the Dealabs report, those differences may come from the public Essential catalog not being fully updated yet. One example is Goat Simulator, which is reportedly missing from the Starter list but is also leaving Game Pass Essential at the end of this month. That suggests the Starter and Essential libraries may eventually align more closely when Microsoft officially announces the new tier.

The catalog itself is surprisingly strong for an entry level tier. It includes major first party Xbox titles such as Gears 5, Halo 5: Guardians, Halo Wars 2, Grounded, Fallout 4, Fallout 76, Fable Anniversary, DOOM Eternal, DOOM 64, State of Decay 2, Psychonauts, and Psychonauts 2. It also includes highly respected indie and third party titles such as Hades, Dead Cells, Celeste, Stardew Valley, TUNIC, Firewatch, INSIDE, LIMBO, Spiritfarer, Slay the Spire, Vampire Survivors, and Unpacking.
From a value standpoint, this gives Starter a broad mix of genres: action, RPG, survival, platforming, racing, co op, strategy, cozy games, horror, shooters, and indie hits. For new Xbox users, casual players, families, or Discord Nitro subscribers, this kind of catalog could serve as a strong introduction to the Xbox ecosystem without requiring a full Game Pass Ultimate subscription.
The reported Discord Nitro bundle also adds another layer to the strategy. If Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition is included with Nitro or offered alongside it, Microsoft could use Discord as a major acquisition channel. Discord remains one of the most important social platforms for gaming communities, especially across PC and multiplayer audiences. Bundling a smaller Game Pass tier with Nitro could help Xbox reach users who are not currently tied to the console ecosystem.
At the same time, Microsoft must be careful not to make the Game Pass structure too complicated. Game Pass has already gone through multiple branding, pricing, and catalog adjustments. Adding Starter Edition could make sense if it gives users a cheaper, simpler entry point. But if Essential, Starter, Premium, PC Game Pass, and Ultimate all have overlapping benefits with different multiplayer, cloud, and library rules, players may struggle to understand which tier they actually need.
This also continues the pattern of major changes under Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. After years of Game Pass being positioned around day one releases, broad access, and higher tier value, Xbox now appears to be moving toward a more segmented subscription model. Cheaper prices, more flexible tiers, limited cloud gaming, partner bundles, and possibly fewer day one mega releases all point to a different strategy.
For Microsoft, the goal may be to create a wider subscription funnel. Starter could attract casual users. PC Game Pass could serve dedicated PC players. Premium or Essential could cover console users who need multiplayer and a larger catalog. Ultimate could remain the full access tier for users who want everything. If executed well, this could give Xbox more pricing flexibility and help fight subscription fatigue.
For players, the value will depend heavily on price. If Starter lands at a very low monthly cost and includes Discord Nitro, cloud gaming hours, and a solid rotating library, it could be an attractive entry level option. If the price is too close to higher tiers, the lack of online multiplayer may make it feel limited.
For now, Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition remains unofficial, but the leaked catalog gives us a clear idea of what Microsoft may be preparing. It looks like a budget friendly tier built around a curated library, casual discovery, partner value, and limited cloud access rather than the full Xbox online ecosystem.
If Microsoft confirms it soon, the biggest question will be whether Starter Edition simplifies Game Pass or makes the subscription lineup even more complicated.
Would you subscribe to a cheaper Game Pass tier if it included more than 50 games and Discord Nitro, but removed online multiplayer access?
