Spyro: A Realm Beyond Brings Toys For Bob Back to the Purple Dragon in Spring 2027

Activision has officially revealed Spyro: A Realm Beyond, marking the long awaited return of one of gaming’s most recognizable platforming icons. Announced during the Xbox Games Showcase 2026, the new adventure is being developed by Toys For Bob and is scheduled to launch in Spring 2027 for PC and current gen consoles, including Switch 2.

For Spyro fans, the biggest relief is that this will not be locked behind console exclusivity. Spyro: A Realm Beyond will arrive across platforms, meaning PlayStation and Nintendo players will not be left behind. Xbox players, however, will receive an extra benefit, as the game will also be available through Xbox Game Pass.

The announcement is a major moment for both the franchise and Toys For Bob. The studio last brought Spyro back to the spotlight with Spyro Reignited Trilogy in 2018, a full remake of the original 3 games that helped reintroduce the purple dragon to modern audiences. Since then, fans have been waiting to see whether Toys For Bob would get the chance to create a new original Spyro adventure.

That question became more complicated after Toys For Bob split from Activision and became independent. Even after it was confirmed that the studio’s next project would be published by Microsoft and Activision, it remained unclear whether the team would be able to return to Spyro or Crash Bandicoot. With Spyro: A Realm Beyond now revealed, Toys For Bob is once again carrying forward a franchise it clearly understands deeply.

In an official Xbox Wire interview, Toys For Bob studio head Paul Yan acknowledged how long fans have been waiting for Spyro’s return.

"I know the wait has been excruciating but we’re so thrilled to finally come out of stealth and confirm that a new Spyro game is indeed what we’ve been up to these past few years."

Yan also reflected on the studio’s long relationship with the character, from Spyro’s influence on Skylanders to the development of Spyro Reignited Trilogy.

"The little purple dragon means so much to us. We have a long history together; Spyro was the main inspiration that led to the innovations of the Skylanders series that we pioneered, and the remake of the original three games built from the ground up in the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, which reintroduced Spyro to a modern audience. Ever since then, we’ve been dreaming of what an original new adventure would look like, and that dream has manifested in Spyro: A Realm Beyond."
— Paul Yan

Based on the trailer, Spyro: A Realm Beyond looks like a major step forward for the franchise. The footage suggests improved flying, not just traditional gliding, along with deeper exploration and a larger sense of adventure. Toys For Bob also appears to be pushing the story into slightly more mature emotional territory while keeping the colorful, joyful, and dream like identity that defines Spyro.

Yan said the team is still building on the charm that made Spyro special, while also introducing a new antagonist who raises the stakes.

"A big reason why I love Spyro games is that they are ultimately joyful, dream like experiences full of charming, quirky friends and Spyro: A Realm Beyond certainly builds on that important foundation. In the showcase announcement trailer, you may have noticed that we are introducing the threat of a new antagonist in this story, and his presence will raise the stakes. He will challenge Spyro’s abilities and push him to new emotional depths that will see Spyro grow as a hero. It’s a story full of heart and I can’t wait for you to experience this new journey."
— Paul Yan

That direction could be exactly what Spyro needs in 2027. The franchise has always worked best when it combines accessible platforming, colorful worlds, expressive characters, collectible driven exploration, and a sense of playful fantasy. A Realm Beyond seems to preserve that foundation while giving Spyro more movement freedom, more emotional range, and a larger adventure suited for modern hardware.

Yan closed his comments with a message directly to fans.

"Spyro is back. He is headlining a brand new adventure. And I can’t wait for you to experience how he soars to new heights in Spyro: A Realm Beyond. This game was developed with love for Spyro and more importantly, for you."
— Paul Yan

The reveal also fits into a wider trend of legacy franchises returning during the Xbox Games Showcase 2026. While Xbox focused heavily on rebuilding its identity and bringing back select console exclusives, Spyro’s return shows that Microsoft and Activision are also willing to revive beloved multiplatform names with the studios best suited for them.

For longtime fans, Spyro: A Realm Beyond is more than another nostalgic comeback. It is the first new Spyro game in years, developed by the same studio that successfully rebuilt the original trilogy for a modern audience. If Toys For Bob can deliver stronger flying, deeper exploration, a memorable new villain, and the same charm that made Spyro a classic, A Realm Beyond could become one of the most exciting platforming releases of 2027.

Spyro: A Realm Beyond launches in Spring 2027 for PC, current gen consoles, and Switch 2, with Xbox Game Pass availability confirmed for Xbox players.

Are you excited to see Spyro return with a brand new adventure, and do you want A Realm Beyond to focus more on flying, exploration, story, or classic platforming?
