Satya Nadella Expects Xbox Growth in Fiscal 2027 Despite Revenue Decline

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella expects Xbox to return to growth during fiscal 2027, even as the gaming business enters the new financial year with declining revenue, weaker hardware demand, restructuring costs, and continued pressure on console economics.

During Microsoft’s fiscal 2026 fourth quarter earnings call, Nadella said the company is making difficult decisions across content, platform development, and operations to reset Xbox for sustainable growth. Fiscal 2027 began on July 1, 2026 and concludes on June 30, 2027, meaning Microsoft expects the recovery to begin within the current financial year rather than by the end of calendar 2027.

The objective follows another difficult quarter for Microsoft Gaming. Xbox revenue declined 10% compared with the previous year and 11% when adjusted for currency changes. Xbox content and services revenue also fell 10%, although the comparison included a stronger previous year supported by major first party releases and successful ports such as Forza Horizon 5 on PlayStation 5.

Microsoft expects the immediate decline to continue. Chief Financial Officer Amy Hood forecast that Xbox content and services revenue will fall by a mid single digit percentage during the first quarter of fiscal 2027, while hardware revenue is also expected to decline year over year. This suggests Nadella’s growth target depends on performance improving later in the financial year rather than an immediate recovery.

The wider More Personal Computing segment, which includes Xbox alongside Windows, devices, and search advertising, recorded a 14% decline in operating income. Microsoft said operating expenses increased partly because of continued shared research investment and impairment charges connected to Xbox. However, the company does not separately disclose complete Xbox profit or operating margin figures, making it impossible to determine the division’s precise financial performance from the quarterly report alone.

The gaming decline contrasts with Microsoft’s record corporate results. Annual revenue surpassed $331 billion, increasing 18%, while operating income rose 21% to more than $155 billion. Microsoft Cloud exceeded $214 billion in annual revenue, demonstrating how strongly Azure and artificial intelligence are growing while Xbox undergoes another major operational reset.

Nadella previously said Xbox must finally become a sustainable business after 25 years of investment. As covered in our report on Microsoft’s demand for Xbox sustainability, the division is attempting to improve monetization, simplify its studio portfolio, rebuild its console strategy, and focus investment on intellectual properties capable of generating stronger long term returns.

Returning Xbox to growth during fiscal 2027 is possible, but Microsoft has given itself a narrow recovery window. Content and services remain under pressure, hardware revenue is expected to decline again, and restructuring could weaken the development teams responsible for producing the games needed to reverse that trend.

Xbox owns one of the strongest intellectual property portfolios in gaming, but ownership alone does not guarantee growth. Microsoft must convert franchises such as Halo, Forza, Gears of War, Fallout, Call of Duty, Minecraft, and The Elder Scrolls into a consistent pipeline while giving players a clearer reason to remain inside the Xbox ecosystem.

The greatest risk is that Microsoft attempts to improve financial performance primarily through layoffs and cost reductions. These actions can improve margins temporarily, but sustainable growth will require stronger games, better hardware value, healthier Game Pass engagement, and greater confidence among developers and players.

Can Xbox return to growth before June 30, 2027, or will Microsoft need more time to complete its gaming reset?
