PS5, PS5 Pro, and PS Portal Price Rise Rumor Suggests Sony Could Be Preparing Another Sharp Increase in Europe

A new rumor is raising fresh concern around PlayStation hardware pricing in Europe. According to French content creator Gyo, retailers have reportedly been warned that Sony is preparing an imminent price increase across much of the PlayStation hardware family, including the PS5 Slim Disc Edition, PS5 Pro, and PS Portal. At the time of writing, Sony has not officially confirmed any new European pricing, so this should still be treated as a rumor rather than a finalized market move.

If the rumor proves accurate, the numbers would be significant. The PS5 Slim Disc Edition would move from 549.99€ to 649.99€, the PS5 Pro from 799.99€ to 899.99€, and the PS Portal from 219.99€ to 249.99€. Gyo did not specify a new price for the PS5 Slim Digital Edition, but if Sony applied the same 100€ increase pattern to that model as well, it would rise from 499.99€ to 599.99€. That would represent another major step up for a console family that has already seen official European price increases more than once during this generation.

Console Current EU MSRP Rumoured New Price Increase % Hike
PS5 Slim Digital Edition €499.99
PS5 Slim Disc Edition €549.99 €649.99 +€100 +18.2%
PS5 Pro €799.99 €899.99 +€100 +12.5%
PS Portal €219.99 €249.99 +€30 +13.6%

*Rumored extrapolation based on the same increase pattern. This model was not specifically named in the rumor.

The reason this rumor feels plausible is simple: Sony has already shown it is willing to raise PlayStation prices mid generation when market conditions worsen. In August 2022, Sony officially announced a PS5 price increase in select markets, including Europe, raising the standard PS5 with Ultra HD Blu ray disc drive from 499.99€ to 549.99€ and the PS5 Digital Edition from 399.99€ to 449.99€. Sony cited the global economic environment, high inflation rates, and adverse currency trends at the time.

Sony then made another official European adjustment in April 2025. That time, the company raised the PS5 Digital Edition in Europe to 499.99€, while keeping the standard disc model unchanged and leaving PS5 Pro pricing unchanged as well. Sony said the updated RRPs took effect starting April 14, 2025. That means the Digital Edition has already climbed by 100€ compared with its 2020 launch pricing even before this new rumor.

The rumored comparison with Xbox also makes the story more interesting. Microsoft’s current listed price for the Xbox Series X in Ireland is 599.99€, which means a 649.99€ PS5 Slim Disc Edition would move above it, while a 899.99€ PS5 Pro would sit in a much more premium position. Meanwhile, Sony’s official announced European price for PS Portal has been 219.99€ since launch, so a move to 249.99€ would be a noticeable jump for a device that is already positioned as a niche accessory rather than a standalone console.

There is also a broader industry backdrop that makes price pressure easier to imagine, even if this specific rumor remains unconfirmed. Sony has already publicly referenced inflation and currency challenges when raising PS5 prices before, and hardware makers across the industry have been under continuing pressure from component costs, supply chain volatility, and shifting global trade conditions. That does not prove this rumor is true, but it does mean the idea is far from impossible.

For now, the key point is caution. Retail alerts and creator reports can surface before official announcements, but until Sony publishes updated European RRPs, nothing here should be treated as final. Still, if this rumor is accurate, PlayStation buyers in Europe may be looking at one of the most aggressive late generation pricing shifts yet, especially for the PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro.

Would a 649.99€ PS5 Slim or 899.99€ PS5 Pro change your buying plans, or do you think PlayStation can still command those prices in 2026?
