PlayStation Confirms Frame Generation Is Coming, But Not Before 2027 at the Earliest

PlayStation has now officially confirmed that machine learning based frame generation is part of its roadmap, but players should not expect it to arrive this year. In comments shared with Digital Foundry, PlayStation lead system architect Mark Cerny said that Sony and AMD co developed the technology behind FSR Redstone Frame Generation through Project Amethyst, and that an equivalent frame generation library should appear on PlayStation platforms at some point. He also made it clear that there are no more releases planned for 2026, which strongly suggests this feature will not land on PlayStation hardware before 2027 at the earliest.

That confirmation is important because it shows Sony’s AMD partnership is now extending beyond upscaling and into a broader machine learning rendering stack. Cerny also clarified that the upgraded PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution now rolling out on PlayStation 5 Pro uses the same core co developed algorithm as FSR Redstone’s upscaling component. Sony had already announced the improved PSSR rollout on the official PlayStation Blog in late February, with broader game support and a system software update arriving in March.

In practical terms, this means Sony is not simply watching AMD’s PC side progress from the sidelines. It is actively helping shape the technology. That matters for the long term because it suggests future PlayStation image reconstruction and frame generation features may continue to evolve in parallel with AMD’s broader graphics roadmap rather than feeling like a delayed port of PC features. Based on Cerny’s wording, the frame generation side is still in development for PlayStation, but it is clearly no longer theoretical.

There is also an important distinction to make here. Frame generation is not entirely new to Sony’s ecosystem. Some PlayStation 5 games have already used AMD FSR 3 frame generation, but that earlier approach is not the same as the newer machine learning assisted solution tied to Redstone and Project Amethyst. The newer version is expected to deliver more advanced image quality improvements, especially in areas such as artifact reduction and ghosting control, which have been key pain points for previous generation frame interpolation methods.

The remaining question is where this eventually lands first. Cerny did not confirm whether the upcoming library is intended for PlayStation 5 Pro, a future PlayStation handheld platform, or the next generation PlayStation system. That ambiguity is notable, because while the wording confirms the technology is coming to PlayStation platforms, it stops short of promising it for the current console generation. For now, the clearest takeaway is that Sony has locked in machine learning frame generation as part of its future graphics strategy, but the wait is going to be longer than many PlayStation users may have hoped.

For the broader console market, this is still a meaningful signal. Sony is effectively confirming that machine learning based image enhancement is becoming a permanent part of the platform level rendering toolbox. Upscaling has already moved from optional feature to core pillar on PlayStation 5 Pro, and frame generation now looks set to follow. The only missing piece is timing, and right now, all signs point to 2027 or later.
