Paywalled Cyberpunk 2077 VR Mod Forcibly Taken Down by CD Projekt RED After DMCA Request

Renowned VR modder Luke Ross says his Cyberpunk 2077 VR mod has been taken down following a DMCA request filed by CD Projekt RED. The mod let VR players experience Night City through a headset for a substantial immersion boost, and it has been available in some form since late February 2022. What makes the timing notable is that, according to Ross, the takedown does not appear to be connected to CDPR pursuing an official VR mode. Ross says he was able to discuss the matter directly with CDPR leadership, including the VP of business development and the legal department, suggesting this was a deliberate enforcement decision rather than an automated platform sweep.

Ross did not mince words in his Patreon writeup, criticizing what he describes as a corporate mindset prioritizing the bottom line over players. Still, the broader community reaction has been more pragmatic than shocked. When a mod is monetized behind a hard paywall, it starts to look less like fandom driven tinkering and more like commercial exploitation of someone else’s IP, which is exactly the kind of scenario that often triggers enforcement. Many players are pointing out that the outcome might have been different if the mod were free to access, with optional donations supporting development.

This also lands in contrast with CDPR’s general track record around modding. CDPR has publicly supported free modding around The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, and has previously encouraged mod creation through official tooling such as The Witcher 3’s REDkit. Cyberpunk 2077’s modding scene has exploded in scale over the last few years, and the game has become a major player in overall mod downloads, reflecting just how engaged the community still is.

Ross, for his part, is not stepping away from VR conversion work. Shortly after the Cyberpunk takedown, he published another Patreon post announcing a new VR mod for Baldur’s Gate 3, framed as a tougher technical challenge due to its camera style.

If you were CDPR, would you draw the line at paywalled mods only, or would you want licensing controls even for donation funded releases?
