NVIDIA's Taiwan HQ Could Face Delays Amid Dispute With Local Insurance Firm

NVIDIA’s ambitious Taiwan headquarters project, dubbed “Constellation”, may be facing delays following a dispute with a local insurance company, according to a report by Taiwan Economic Daily. The development could temporarily halt progress on one of the company’s most significant overseas expansions, as both sides remain at odds over land and construction terms.

Announced during Computex 2025, the Taiwan HQ was heralded as a major milestone for the company and a reaffirmation of Taiwan’s central role in NVIDIA’s global supply chain. CEO Jensen Huang emphasized that the decision to establish the new headquarters was a reflection of the company’s deep partnership with Taiwanese firms such as TSMC, ASUS, MSI, and Gigabyte, which form the backbone of its ecosystem.

The “Constellation” project spans 3.89 hectares and is intended to serve as a central hub for NVIDIA’s operations in the region. However, the report reveals that progress on the project has stalled, particularly at the T17 and T18 bases, due to ongoing negotiations between NVIDIA and Shin Kong Life Insurance, a subsidiary of Shin Kong Bank, which controls the land involved.

According to sources cited in the report, Shin Kong Life Insurance is pushing for a “build-first-then-transfer” plan, a development model where the insurance company would construct the headquarters before transferring land ownership to NVIDIA. The U.S. chipmaker, however, reportedly opposes this approach, insisting on full control over the building’s design and construction. NVIDIA’s resistance stems from its stringent architectural standards and desire to ensure that the project aligns precisely with its technological and cultural aspirations.

The company’s leadership reportedly prefers to outsource construction to its own trusted contractors rather than relinquish creative or engineering control to a third party. Granting construction rights to another entity, sources suggest, could risk the final structure not meeting NVIDIA’s design and quality expectations.

Complicating matters further, the project has reportedly become entangled in domestic political debates. Although specific details remain unclear, the report mentions that “political war of words” surrounding the project has made the situation more delicate. While it’s not unusual for large-scale land and infrastructure deals in Taiwan to draw political scrutiny, any prolonged dispute could pose challenges for NVIDIA as it seeks to establish a long-term presence in the country.

Despite the complications, industry observers expect NVIDIA to resolve the situation swiftly. The establishment of a regional headquarters in Taiwan is seen as strategically vital for the company, not only to strengthen ties with local manufacturing partners but also to support ongoing collaborations in AI, semiconductors, and GPU production.

Jensen Huang has frequently underscored Taiwan’s irreplaceable role in the global technology ecosystem, referring to it as “the beating heart of the semiconductor industry.” The construction of Constellation symbolizes NVIDIA’s continued commitment to that vision, making its timely completion a high priority for both the company and its local stakeholders.

While delays and disagreements are not uncommon in large real estate developments, the situation highlights the complexity of navigating Taiwan’s corporate, financial, and political landscapes. For now, all eyes are on whether NVIDIA and Shin Kong Life Insurance can reach a compromise that allows construction to move forward.
