Noctua Reportedly Interested in RTX 5090 Noctua Edition, but GPU Supply Shortages Stall Release
The ASUS GeForce RTX 5080 Noctua OC Edition, launched earlier this month, has already cemented itself as one of the most premium and expensive variants of NVIDIA’s latest generation GPUs. Retailing at nearly $2,300 in China and more than €1,600 in Europe, the collaboration between ASUS and Noctua stands out thanks to its quad-slot heatsink, multiple heat pipes, and signature Noctua NF-A12 fans.
But what about the RTX 5090? According to a report from KitGuru, Noctua has confirmed that it wants to produce a GeForce RTX 5090 Noctua Edition, but poor chip availability is preventing the project from moving forward.
The RTX 5090 uses NVIDIA’s Blackwell GB202 GPU, which is also deployed in high-end workstation and AI-focused cards such as the RTX Pro 6000. Demand for these chips is extremely high, particularly as companies repurpose RTX 5090 cards into AI accelerators. Reports even indicate that RTX 5090s are being smuggled into China and converted into dedicated AI GPUs, further constraining availability.
This scarcity leaves limited room for custom editions like the one Noctua would produce, despite the company’s eagerness to create a 5090 variant.
Noctua’s Position
In a statement to KitGuru, Noctua said it would “love to do a 5090” but acknowledged that for now, it simply cannot secure enough chips to make the edition viable. As such, enthusiasts currently only have the RTX 5080 Noctua OC as an option.
Given that the RTX 5080 Noctua Edition already commands nearly double the price of NVIDIA’s base and Founders Edition models in some regions, analysts expect that a potential RTX 5090 Noctua Edition could exceed $3,000, and possibly push past $3,500 depending on global availability.
While the 5090 project is stalled, Noctua hasn’t abandoned the idea. Should GPU supply conditions improve, the company could revisit the possibility of a Noctua-cooled 5090 in the future. For now, however, the ultra-premium 5080 Noctua OC remains the only option for fans of the brand’s distinct cooling and aesthetics.
Would you be willing to pay a premium price for a potential RTX 5090 Noctua Edition, or is the RTX 5080 Noctua OC already too expensive?
