No Rest for the Wicked 1.0 Delayed to March 2027 as Moon Studios Seeks More Polish
Moon Studios has delayed the full No Rest for the Wicked 1.0 release from October 2026 to March 2027, extending the action RPG's time in early access by several additional months. The studio says the game is close to completion but does not yet meet the quality standard it wants for the full launch, with the additional development time being used to improve performance, refine the new class system and complete another round of overall polish. The March 2027 window applies to PC and PlayStation 5, while Xbox Series X and S and Nintendo Switch 2 release dates remain undecided.
Moon Studios CEO and Creative Director Thomas Mahler explained that development accelerated considerably following the January launch of the major No Rest for the Wicked Together update, which introduced the game's cooperative multiplayer experience. Since then, the team has been working to complete additional 1.0 content, integrate the new class system and continue extensive playtesting. Mahler acknowledged that the absence of news surrounding the next Public Test Realm was a consequence of the build simply not being ready for wider testing.
"The honest truth is that we're a small team, and we're holding our games to a standard we won't compromise on."

Rather than forcing the October release, Moon Studios says it would prefer to spend several additional months addressing remaining issues before removing the early access label. The studio has been developing No Rest for the Wicked in some form since the end of 2016, making the project a decade long investment by the time version 1.0 arrives. Mahler described the goal as delivering something capable of becoming a generational game rather than allowing avoidable bugs and unfinished systems to undermine the final release.
Players will not have to wait until March to experience the next major version. Moon Studios plans to open another Public Test Realm in December 2026, giving the community access to new features and content including the class system. This is expected to be the final public test build before version 1.0 launches. Additional closed testing is also planned during the remaining development period, allowing Moon Studios to gather more performance and gameplay feedback before release.
The delay also changes eligibility for the game's Founders Pack. Originally, Steam players needed to purchase No Rest for the Wicked before July 10, 2026 to qualify, but Moon Studios has now extended the deadline to January 1, 2027 and will retroactively include players who purchased the game after the original cutoff. The Founders Pack includes the Spirit Cavern secret hideout, Sayer's Vow weapon, a custom Founder's Tag and access to an exclusive Public Test Realm even after the full release.
PlayStation 5 preorders are now scheduled to begin in January 2027, with preorder customers also eligible for the Founders Pack. The Xbox Series X and S and Nintendo Switch 2 editions remain planned, but Moon Studios has not provided release windows for either platform. The studio previously indicated that additional optimization work was required for those versions, particularly as it attempts to maintain the game's visual quality and complex systems across different hardware configurations.
No Rest for the Wicked originally entered Steam early access on April 18, 2024, introducing Moon Studios' first major project outside the Ori franchise. The game combines precision action combat with equipment progression, crafting, housing, an interconnected world and a painterly visual presentation, while the Together update substantially expanded the experience through persistent cooperative realms. Moon Studios says it will continue discussing the road toward 1.0 through its Wicked Inside developer diaries ahead of the March launch.
Delaying No Rest for the Wicked only a few weeks before its planned October launch is disappointing, but Moon Studios is making the safer decision. Leaving early access creates a very different expectation from releasing another experimental build, particularly after more than 2 years of public development and community feedback.
The class system is especially important because adding a major progression mechanic this late in development can affect combat balance, equipment, encounters and long term build diversity throughout the entire game. If Moon Studios already knows those systems and performance still need work, another 5 months of testing is preferable to launching 1.0 simply because an earlier window was announced.
March 2027 now becomes a major test of whether Moon Studios can convert years of early access iteration into the polished action RPG it has repeatedly promised.
Would you rather Moon Studios delay No Rest for the Wicked until March 2027 for additional polish, or were you ready for the full release this October?
