Nioh 3 Hell Rising Expands Its Open Area Formula With New Weapons and Harder Endgame Content

Team NINJA is preparing to expand Nioh 3 with Hell Rising, the first of 2 major downloadable expansions planned for the action RPG. The new campaign launches on August 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and PC through Steam, introducing another historical era, a transformed open area, new combat tools, stronger enemies, and a higher difficulty level designed for experienced players.

Nioh 3 launched on February 6, 2026, and became the fastest selling entry in the series after surpassing 1 million copies worldwide. Its biggest structural change was the move from the more restricted mission environments of earlier games toward larger open areas, giving players more freedom to explore, approach encounters, and switch between Samurai and Ninja combat styles.

Hell Rising takes protagonist and appointed shogun Takechiyo to Edo in 1651 after an unknown yokai draws him into the future. The death of the future Takechiyo has ended the period of peace, allowing the Crucible to reclaim Edo and transform the castle town into a devastated battlefield filled with yokai, rebels, and foreign alchemists. Takechiyo must cooperate with the one eyed swordsman Yagyu Jubei and Spanish envoy Rodrigo while investigating another conspiracy involving Spirit Stones and an enemy carrying a deep resentment toward the shogunate.

The Hell Rising first look trailer places its strongest emphasis on the new weapon options. Team NINJA has officially confirmed the Hoko and Shield for Samurai Style and the Ninja Hoko and Shield for Ninja Style. Both combine the offensive reach of a short spear with defensive shield mechanics, allowing players to attack while guarding and throw the shield as part of more tactical combat sequences. This could create a more reactive approach than many previous Nioh weapon types, which generally rewarded constant pressure, mobility, and aggressive Ki management.

Hell Rising will also introduce Enlightened One’s Journey, a difficulty level positioned above Shogun’s Journey. The mode increases progression opportunities through stronger equipment, additional Soul Cores, higher character level limits, and increased equipment value limits through Soul Matching. It will be joined by Hundred Demon Realms Picture Scrolls, which generate customizable combat challenges using different enemy combinations, stages, conditions, and special rules. These battles can be completed alone or through multiplayer sessions, creating a potentially extensive endgame farming system.

Additional content includes new Guardian Spirits, skills, Martial Arts, Ninjutsu, Onmyo Magic, Graces, equipment, and Soul Cores. These additions continue the direction established by update 1.05, which introduced Stone of Penance and new Battle Scroll missions after some experienced players argued that the base game was less demanding than previous entries.

Hell Rising appears to understand exactly where Nioh 3 succeeded. Instead of abandoning its open area structure, Team NINJA is using the expansion to build a larger and more dangerous combat space while increasing the depth of progression, equipment farming, and high level challenges.

The Hoko and Shield could become the most meaningful addition. A defensive weapon capable of blocking, countering, attacking, and transforming its shield into a projectile has the potential to support a fundamentally different rhythm from the highly aggressive playstyles normally associated with Nioh.

Team NINJA’s decision to develop 2 major expansions instead of dividing the season into 3 smaller releases could also allow each campaign to deliver more substantial locations and systems. Hell Rising already appears positioned as more than a short collection of missions, combining a new story, historical setting, weapon category, difficulty level, progression systems, and multiplayer compatible endgame content.

Could the Hoko and Shield become Nioh 3’s best weapon type, or will you continue using a faster and more aggressive build?
