Nioh 3 Patch 1.05 Raises The Challenge With Stone Of Penance And New Battle Scrolls Missions
Nioh 3 has received its biggest post launch update so far, with update 1.05 introducing new mechanics, balance adjustments, fixes for PC and PlayStation 5, and additional content aimed directly at one of the most common community complaints since launch: the game was not as punishing as previous entries in the series.
The standout addition in update 1.05 is the Stone of Penance, a new gameplay mechanic that becomes available from the opening mission, Escape from Hitokoto Slope, onward in the Shogun’s Journey difficulty level. The mechanic can be accessed through Shrines, where players are able to exchange an accessory for a Stone of Penance. In return, the game increases the drop rate of high rarity equipment, but it also strengthens enemies, creating a risk and reward system that pushes players into much more dangerous encounters.
While the official update notes do not specify exactly how much stronger enemies become through Stone of Penance, early community testing suggests that the increase is substantial. Reddit user EternalFlareUltra shared a quick look at the optional boss Demon of Pride using Stone of Penance +5 compared with regular New Game Plus, showing a far more demanding fight. Based on this testing, enemy HP, Ki, and attack power appear to be roughly tripled, making encounters significantly more punishing and placing greater pressure on player execution, Ki management, and build optimization.
This is a meaningful adjustment for Nioh 3, especially because difficulty has always been part of Team NINJA’s identity. The previous Nioh games built their reputation around brutal enemy pressure, demanding boss fights, layered loot progression, and builds that still required precise execution to survive high level content. Nioh 3, while still mechanically rich, was considered by some players to be more forgiving at launch, particularly for veterans who were already familiar with stance control, Ki Pulse timing, Yokai abilities, and endgame build crafting.
Stone of Penance gives those players a direct way to scale the challenge while also improving the reward loop. The higher equipment drop rate makes the mechanic attractive for players chasing optimized gear, but the increased enemy power means farming comes with a much higher performance requirement. Overpowered builds will likely still be able to tear through bosses, as expected in any Nioh endgame environment, but the mechanic appears to restore some of the danger and tension that long time fans expected from the series.
Update 1.05 also expands the game with 5 new Battle Scrolls missions. These include Within Time Everlasting in 1622 CE Final Battle of Edo, unlocked by completing the main game; Rampant Temptation in 1622 CE Final Battle of Edo, also unlocked by completing the main game; Supernatural Shrieks in 1622 CE Final Battle of Edo, unlocked by completing one of the new missions; Gathering of the Greats in 1622 CE Final Battle of Edo, unlocked by completing 3 of the new missions; and Demonic Duels in 1622 CE Final Battle of Edo, also unlocked by completing 3 of the new missions.
These new missions give players more reasons to return to the endgame, especially those looking to test builds under harsher conditions. Combined with Stone of Penance, the update creates a stronger post launch foundation for players who wanted more challenge, deeper farming potential, and tougher encounters after completing the main game.
For Team NINJA, this update could be the first major step in shaping Nioh 3 into the demanding long term action RPG experience that fans expected. The studio has historically expanded its games through DLC content, higher difficulty tiers, additional missions, and increasingly dangerous enemy combinations. If Nioh 3 follows that familiar path, Stone of Penance may only be the beginning of a much more intense endgame structure.
Patch 1.05 does not simply add difficulty for the sake of difficulty. It gives players control over how much risk they want to take while linking that risk to better loot opportunities. That design fits naturally into Nioh’s identity, where mastery, optimization, and punishment are all part of the same gameplay loop.
For players who felt Nioh 3 launched too soft compared with its predecessors, update 1.05 looks like a serious course correction. The game now has a stronger challenge option, new Battle Scrolls content, and a better reason for veteran players to push their builds further. If future DLC continues in this direction, Nioh 3 could still evolve into one of Team NINJA’s strongest action RPG endgame experiences.
Do you think Stone of Penance is enough to fix Nioh 3’s difficulty curve, or should Team NINJA introduce even harder difficulty tiers in future DLC?
