Naughty Dog Wraps Intergalactic Cinematic Shoot as 2027 Release Speculation Grows

Naughty Dog has reached a major production milestone with Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, confirming that the ambitious cinematic shoot for its upcoming PlayStation 5 science fiction adventure has officially wrapped. The studio shared the update on August 31 alongside an image of lead actress Tati Gabrielle in performance capture equipment, marking the most substantial public development update for the game since its original reveal at The Game Awards 2024.

"That is a wrap on the very ambitious Intergalactic cinematic shoot! This cast killed it!"
— Quote by: Naughty Dog

The wording is important because Naughty Dog specifically confirmed completion of the cinematic shoot, rather than development of the entire game. Performance capture provides the acting, facial performances and physical movements required for cinematics and other character driven sequences, but substantial work can continue afterward across animation, gameplay, level production, visual effects, programming, optimization and polishing. Naughty Dog says it cannot wait to show the cast's work "when the time is right," but has not announced when the next gameplay presentation will happen.

The milestone has nevertheless renewed speculation that Intergalactic could launch during 2027. Industry insider NateTheHate previously stated that 2027 is the intended target, although neither Sony nor Naughty Dog has officially announced a release window. The official PlayStation listing continues to show the release date as "To be confirmed," meaning any 2027 timing should still be considered unofficial.

Naughty Dog's previous production history provides some context without guaranteeing the same schedule. The Last of Us Part II completed its major cinematic performance capture work during April 2019 and eventually launched on June 19, 2020. That represents roughly 14 months between the milestone and release, although development was later affected by production and distribution complications during 2020. If Intergalactic followed anything close to that timeline, a second half 2027 release would be plausible, but it remains speculation rather than confirmation.

Intergalactic has already been in development since 2020 and represents Naughty Dog's first entirely new franchise since The Last of Us. The game follows Jordan A. Mun, a bounty hunter portrayed by Tati Gabrielle who becomes stranded on Sempiria, a distant planet that lost communication with the outside universe hundreds of years earlier. Everyone who previously traveled to Sempiria searching for answers disappeared, leaving Jordan attempting to become the first person in more than 600 years to escape its orbit. Naughty Dog has described the project as its wildest and most creative story yet.

Gameplay remains largely under wraps. Neil Druckmann previously said Intergalactic is intended to feature the deepest gameplay Naughty Dog has ever developed, taking lessons from Uncharted and The Last of Us while pushing those systems considerably further. The announcement trailer showed Jordan confronting a large robotic enemy using a red bladed melee weapon, but Naughty Dog has yet to reveal the broader combat structure, exploration systems or exactly how large Sempiria will be. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are composing the soundtrack.

The cast continues expanding as production progresses, with several longtime Naughty Dog collaborators reportedly involved alongside Gabrielle. However, the studio has deliberately kept many character identities and story details secret. That silence has made Intergalactic one of PlayStation's most mysterious major first party projects, particularly after more than 1 year without another substantial trailer.

The timing of Naughty Dog's announcement also comes immediately before PlayStation's September 3 State of Play, naturally creating speculation about a potential appearance. Sony has not confirmed Intergalactic for the presentation, however, and Naughty Dog's statement that it will reveal the cast's work "when the time is right" does not guarantee an imminent trailer. The project is currently confirmed for PlayStation 5, with no official release date attached.

Finishing the cinematic shoot is a meaningful milestone, but it should not be confused with Intergalactic entering its final months of development. Naughty Dog's games depend heavily on performance capture, animation and cinematic presentation, and converting that captured material into the polished sequences players eventually see requires substantial post production work.

Still, the timing makes a 2027 launch increasingly believable. Intergalactic has been in development since 2020, principal cinematic production is now wrapped and reports have independently pointed toward 2027 as the current internal target. If that schedule holds, Naughty Dog could finally be approaching the point where it is ready to show what it means by the deepest gameplay in the studio's history.

Do you think Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet will make its 2027 target, and what do you want Naughty Dog to reveal next, gameplay, exploration or more of Sempiria?
