Koei Tecmo Reveals New Action IP Codenamed FUJI Through Japanese Government Program

Koei Tecmo Games is developing a completely new intellectual property under the working title FUJI, according to an official project list published by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. The unannounced game appeared among the companies and productions selected for support through the government’s IP360 initiative, revealing that Koei Tecmo intends to build another globally focused franchise around its experience with action games and Eastern inspired visual design.

The official METI IP360 listing identifies the project as the development of a new game titled FUJI. The description states that Koei Tecmo plans to use its existing creative and technical strengths to establish an original property capable of succeeding internationally and expanding beyond a single game.

Details remain extremely limited. Koei Tecmo has not announced the setting, characters, combat system, platforms, release window, or whether FUJI will be developed by Team NINJA, Omega Force, Gust, or another internal production group. The phrase action game suggests that combat will play a central role, but it does not confirm whether the project will follow the demanding structure of Nioh and Wo Long, the large battlefield design of Dynasty Warriors, or an entirely different direction.

FUJI was selected under the first round of IP360 support for large scale content production. METI received 90 applications in this category and approved 27 projects from 19 companies. Other selected game companies include Arc System Works, Konami, Square Enix, SEGA, Applibot, and DeNA. The initiative is intended to strengthen Japanese content exports by supporting original properties, international distribution, localization, promotion, and long term intellectual property growth.

The project appears at a productive moment for Koei Tecmo. Team NINJA released Nioh 3 in February 2026, with the game surpassing 1 million copies faster than any previous entry in the franchise. The publisher has also announced Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember for early 2027 and confirmed Attack on Titan 3 for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X and S, and PC.

FUJI may represent an attempt to establish another original franchise alongside Nioh, Wo Long, and Rise of the Ronin. Koei Tecmo has increasingly invested in new action properties rooted in Japanese and Chinese history, mythology, and martial traditions, while adapting those influences into modern combat systems intended for international audiences. The IP360 description suggests that FUJI will follow the same global ambition while being designed for wider expansion beyond the first game.

Government support does not reveal how far development has progressed or guarantee that the working title will reach release unchanged. However, the public listing confirms that FUJI is an active and strategically important production rather than an internal concept without formal backing. Koei Tecmo has not announced when the game will receive its first trailer or official presentation.

FUJI is intriguing because Koei Tecmo is not presenting it as a small experimental release. The company is describing the project as the beginning of a property intended to achieve worldwide success and support broader expansion, suggesting a significant production rather than a limited side project.

The largest question is which internal studio is leading development. Team NINJA would immediately create expectations for precise combat and demanding encounters, while Omega Force could point toward larger battlefields and high enemy counts. Until Koei Tecmo identifies the team, the description remains broad enough to support several possibilities.

Koei Tecmo has built considerable momentum through Nioh, Wo Long, and Rise of the Ronin. FUJI will need a distinctive identity rather than simply combining familiar historical settings and action systems, but the publisher has already demonstrated that it can transform regional history and mythology into franchises with international appeal.

What direction should Koei Tecmo take with FUJI, a demanding Team NINJA action RPG, a large scale Omega Force game, or something completely different?
