GTA VI Extended Look Becomes Netflix’s Most Watched Title With 31.1 Million Views
Rockstar Games has demonstrated just how far Grand Theft Auto VI reaches beyond the traditional gaming audience, with GTA VI: An Extended Look becoming Netflix’s most watched title of the week after generating 31.1 million views in only 4 days.
According to Netflix’s official Top 10 report, the 27 minute Grand Theft Auto VI presentation debuted on August 27 and immediately climbed to No. 1 on the English language film chart. It also ranked No. 1 in 87 of the 93 countries tracked globally by Netflix, putting Rockstar’s gaming showcase ahead of every film and television production on the service during the reporting period.
The closest film was The Whisper Man with 23.2 million views, giving GTA VI a lead of 7.9 million. On the television side, Death of the Pastor’s Wife debuted with 19 million views, while Season 3 of Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black recorded 13 million. The result is particularly notable considering the GTA VI presentation had only been available since Thursday, giving it 4 days within Netflix’s weekly ranking period.
Rockstar initially gave Netflix a 6 hour exclusive window for GTA VI: An Extended Look before releasing the presentation through its own channels. The unusual distribution strategy was first announced earlier in August, when GTA VI Extended Look was confirmed for a Netflix first premiere, marking the first time Rockstar had used the streaming service to debut a major Grand Theft Auto presentation.
The strategy generated an immediate surge in activity. Data from Sensor Tower reported by GamesBeat indicates Netflix viewership increased approximately 35% from the previous hour when the GTA VI presentation began, while mobile app users climbed nearly 50% compared with the average at the same time across the previous 12 Thursdays. Web traffic reportedly increased 125% compared with the same average period. Some users experienced access problems as demand surged, although reports differed on the extent of the disruption and Netflix continued carrying the presentation.
The presentation itself was captured entirely using in game footage from PlayStation 5 and provides the most extensive official look at GTA VI released so far. Rockstar showcased Jason and Lucia throughout Vice City and the wider state of Leonida, combining cinematic sequences with glimpses of gunfights, vehicles, exploration, recreational activities and the highly detailed open world that will form the foundation of the game.
The Netflix numbers also highlight how Rockstar is positioning GTA VI as something considerably larger than a conventional game launch. Netflix itself described Grand Theft Auto reveals as major cultural moments when announcing the collaboration, while the success of the 6 hour exclusivity suggests premium streaming services could increasingly become viable platforms for major gaming announcements rather than simply destinations for gaming adaptations.
GTA VI is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. Rockstar has already opened preorders, with the Standard Edition priced at $79.99. A PC version has still not been announced.
31.1 million Netflix views in 4 days is more than another impressive GTA VI statistic. It demonstrates the extraordinary marketing leverage Rockstar currently holds. Instead of purchasing advertising around a major entertainment event, Rockstar effectively turned a 27 minute game preview into the event itself, outperforming Netflix’s own films and television releases in the process.
The 6 hour exclusivity is especially interesting for the wider gaming industry. Publishers normally prioritize YouTube, Twitch and their own channels because those platforms place announcements directly in front of established gaming audiences. Rockstar showed that an IP with enough cultural reach can move millions of viewers onto an entirely different platform. That gives Netflix a new type of event content while giving Rockstar access to an audience extending well beyond dedicated gaming communities.
For other publishers, replicating this strategy will be far more difficult. GTA VI is not operating under normal gaming market conditions. With a launch approaching on November 19 and anticipation already reaching mainstream entertainment audiences, Rockstar can make distribution decisions that would be extremely risky for almost any other franchise.
Does GTA VI reaching 31.1 million Netflix views prove major game reveals could become the next form of streaming event, or is Rockstar simply operating at a scale no other publisher can replicate?
