Gigabyte X870 AORUS Tachyon Achieves AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D Frequency World Record: 7.3 GHz Barrier Broken

Gigabyte has just secured a new milestone in the overclocking world, setting the frequency world record for AMD’s Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU with its flagship X870 AORUS Tachyon motherboard. The record was achieved by Gigabyte’s in-house overclocker Hicookie, who pushed the Ryzen 7 9800X3D past 7.31 GHz under LN2 cooling, breaking through the 7.3 GHz barrier for the first time. Previously, the highest recorded frequency on this CPU family was around 7.2 GHz.

The Ryzen 7 9800X3D, part of AMD’s Granite Ridge lineup, is already the fastest gaming CPU on the market thanks to its 2nd Gen 3D V-Cache technology. The chip packs 8 cores, 16 threads, 96 MB of cache, and a 120W TDP, with stock boost clocks topping out at 5.2 GHz.

To achieve the record, Hicookie configured the CPU as follows:

  • SMT disabled (running 8 cores / 8 threads)

  • Voltage: 1.631V

  • Bus Speed: 101.57 MHz

  • Multiplier: 72

  • Motherboard: Gigabyte X870 AORUS Tachyon (dual-DIMM DDR5 OC design)

This setup delivered the staggering 7313 MHz (7.31 GHz) frequency, pushing the chip beyond its previous limitations.

Hicookie didn’t just stop at validation—he stress-tested the CPU in Cinebench 2024. While the chip ran at a slightly lower 6648.8 MHz, it achieved a single-core score of 1733 points, the highest recorded single-core OC result for the Ryzen 7 9800X3D to date.

For comparison:

  • Stock PBO 9800X3D – ~1339 points

  • LN2 OC 9800X3D (6.65 GHz) – 1733 points (+29.5% uplift for a 25.5% frequency increase)

This achievement showcases both the headroom of AMD’s latest 3D V-Cache processors and the raw potential of Gigabyte’s overclocker-focused X870 AORUS Tachyon motherboard. With future AM5 refreshes on the horizon, the record suggests that even higher performance ceilings may soon be possible.
