Gamescom 2026 Sells Out Exhibition Space for First Time as German President Makes Historic Visit
Gamescom 2026 is heading toward a record edition before the doors even open, with organizers confirming that the complete 233,000 square meter exhibition space has sold out for the first time in the event’s history. More than 1,600 exhibitors from 67 countries are preparing to attend Cologne, Germany, from August 26 through August 30, strengthening Gamescom’s position as the world’s largest event dedicated to computer and video games.
International participation continues to grow, with approximately 70% of exhibitors coming from outside Germany. Gamescom 2026 will also feature a record 47 country pavilions representing 40 nations, compared with 40 pavilions representing 35 countries in 2025. Bulgaria, Cyprus, Hungary, Morocco, and Nigeria are among the countries joining the pavilion program for the first time.
The indie sector is expanding alongside the major publishers. More than 420 companies will participate in the Gamescom indie area, representing a 16% increase from the 364 companies present in 2025 and establishing another record for the event. Visitor demand is also already strong, with both Saturday admission and wildcard tickets sold out ahead of the opening.
"With Gamescom 2026 just days away, the outlook couldn’t be better."

Gamescom 2026 will also mark an institutional first. German Federal President Frank Walter Steinmeier will become the first German head of state to attend Gamescom, with Steinmeier scheduled to open the Gamescom Congress on August 27. The congress will focus on the wider role of games across society, democracy, technology, education, culture, and the economy, with its opening program placing particular emphasis on games and democratic participation.
The wider Gamescom schedule begins before the public show floor opens. Gamescom Opening Night Live takes place on August 25 at 8:00 PM CEST, with Geoff Keighley hosting another global showcase of trailers, reveals, and updates. CD Projekt Red has already confirmed that The Witcher 3 Songs of the Past will appear during Opening Night Live, giving players another look at Geralt’s upcoming 2027 expansion.
Major publishers are also preparing significant playable lineups. Capcom will bring Dragon’s Dogma 2 Dark Arisen, Mega Man Dual Override, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and Street Fighter 6, while companies including Nintendo, Xbox, Tencent Games, and Ubisoft are also participating in this year’s event.
The figures continue the growth seen in 2025, when Gamescom attracted 357,000 visitors and 1,568 exhibitors. Organizers have not provided a visitor forecast for 2026 and have emphasized that maximizing attendance is not the primary objective, particularly after previous editions demonstrated the importance of managing crowd density and the overall visitor experience.
Gamescom selling its complete exhibition capacity is a significant statement about where the global gaming event market currently stands. After years of industry consolidation, studio closures, layoffs, and increasingly digital marketing strategies, publishers still see substantial value in putting games directly into players’ hands.
The record indie presence is equally important. Gamescom is no longer only a stage for Xbox, Nintendo, Ubisoft, Capcom, and other major publishers. More than 420 indie companies sharing the same event gives smaller developers access to players, media, publishers, and investors at a scale few other gaming events can currently provide.
With Opening Night Live, a completely booked exhibition floor, record international participation, and the first visit from a German Federal President, Gamescom 2026 is positioned to become one of the most important editions in the event’s history.
