Game Science Announces Black Myth: Zhong Kui, Expanding the Black Myth Series
Game Science, the studio behind the highly anticipated Black Myth: Wukong, has officially announced its next major project: Black Myth: Zhong Kui. The title is set to release on PC and "mainstream console platforms," though no launch window has yet been confirmed.
A New Chapter, Not a Sequel
Despite being the next entry in the Black Myth series, Game Science made it clear that Zhong Kui is not a direct sequel to Black Myth: Wukong. Addressing fan speculation, the studio explained in its FAQ that after completing Wukong’s journey, the team wanted to "build more distinct game experiences, challenge ourselves with bolder features, and bring fresh ideas to our world and narrative design."
Zhong Kui was chosen as the next step in this creative direction, born from both aspiration and reflection. The team expressed confidence that the new project will bring innovation, while also allowing them to address past flaws and regrets from previous development experiences.
What About Wukong?
The reveal of Black Myth: Zhong Kui does not spell the end for Wukong’s story. Game Science reassured fans by closing its statement with: “And to all friends who love Black Myth: Wukong, the westward journey won’t end here.” This confirms that Black Myth: Wukong 2 is still in the cards, though the studio has chosen to focus first on exploring a new path with Zhong Kui.
Early Development Stage
Game Science was transparent about the state of development for Black Myth: Zhong Kui. The studio admitted that the game is "little more than an empty folder at this stage" and that even the story outline isn’t complete yet. This explains why the debut trailer is not gameplay footage, but a cinematic short designed to signal the start of the project.
Although fans may have to wait a long time before seeing actual gameplay, the announcement itself shows that Game Science is committed to expanding the Black Myth universe with fresh ideas and diverse storytelling.
As excitement builds around Black Myth: Zhong Kui, players can rest assured that both this new project and Black Myth: Wukong will continue to evolve, promising a strong future for the series.
What do you think about Game Science’s decision to reveal Zhong Kui before Wukong 2? Would you rather see them continue Wukong’s journey first, or are you excited for a fresh take with Zhong Kui?
